Kut'ya - a traditional sweet wheat and berry pudding eaten by Doukhabors on Christmas Day. ✨️

There are so many unique holiday traditions the Douks would practice. Some of my favorites are:

1. The children would go house to house "sowing" seeds throughout their neighbors homes while singing. They would throw seeds on the beds of the home to promote prosperity and in return the family would give them Kalachi ( a sweet bun) or a large handheld Vareniki (potato dumpling)

2. Doukhabor families would walk through their village while singing hymns from The Living Book, while holding candles at nighttime and the village would sparkle with candlelight.

3. The whole family would come together and clean the home, care for the animals and crops so that everyone could relax and enjoy Christmas dinner together.

4. The adults would gather with friends and family to visit and enjoy each other while the youth would attend special parties specifically for the kids that were filled with games, songs and dancing.

'Tis the season for traditions and making core memories 🎄

These are just a few images that resonate with a Slavic Christmas. 🪆

1. Russian Tea Cookiea
2. Straw woven ornaments
3. Christmas Cake
4. Elaborate painted wooden ornaments
5. Almond Christmas Bread
6. ваше здоровье!
7. Oreshki - Russian Walnut Cookies
8. Embroidered cloth ornaments

Growing up my mom had lots of woven straw ornaments that she passed on to me, it made them into a garland that now is on display in our house 🏠 we've spent the last few years creating lots of special traditions with our family. For Christmas we head deep into the woods and find the perfect (legal) tree. I make a book advent for our kids and every night we read a few by our cozy wood stove. We spend time with our community by attending events, doing winter activities with our chosen family and doing a cull of our home to pass on to other families in need. Foraging native plants for our own wreath and garlands. These things are cheap, easy and special.

What are your christmas traditions? 🎄

We try to not let anything go to waste, so I took all of the fresh beet juice from the relish and made a DELISH vinegrette. 🥳 I actually shocked myself with how good it was, my husband who hates salad actually ate this!

I added fresh Beet juice, apple cider vinegar, lemon and olive oil for the vinegar base and then added in creme fraiche and nutritional yeast to make it rich and creamy. SO GOOD. Definitely a hit, and a potential for final menu. 🪆

I forgot to take a picture of the strudel when it was ready because we all got to excited to eat it 😅

The recipe is called Russian Veg Strudel but it's more like a veggie cheese pie. SUPER delicious, and filled with flavor.

SPICY BEET RELISH 🤩

This is a staple Slavic Condiment - traditionally made with fresh Beets, horseradish root, apple cider vinegar and honey. 🐝

It's so refreshing, the heat from the horseradish isn't overpowering but definitely clears your sinuses. It goes well with fish, chicken, on top of a salad, eggs or charcuterie. Beets are filled with antioxidants and horseradish is a natural immune booster that's also good for anti-inflammatory purposes. It's super easy to make and you can make LOTS of it quick.

🪆Health benefits of beets:
-lowers blood pressure
-fights off cancer
-promotes brain health
-creates red blood cells
-aids in digestion
-cleanses liver and kidneys

🪆health benefits of horseradish
-boosts immunity
-anti inflammatory
-anti bacterial
-aids in common colds
-aids in digestion
-boosts metabolism

Baba Yaga 🐔 🧙‍♀️

Who has heard of Baba Yaga?

She is the Slavic, Boogeyman. There's a reason they called John Wick, Baba Yaga 😂 she is probably the most well known character out of Slavic folklore, and is usually depicted as a child stealing witch who lures children to her hut on chicken legs in the dark part of the woods. She has a flying cauldron and usually a pet crow. I remember learning about Baba Yaga as a child and I was never afraid of the stories that were I'm sure made in order to make misbehaving children, mind their manners.

More likely, Baba Yaga derived from a crone spinster whom decided she wasn't fond of people and decided to go chill in the woods with her fun animal friends and do cool s**t like make potions and spells and everyone thought that was super weird and decided to make her The Boogeyman. Maybe I wasn't scared of the stories because she's one of my role models 🤪 having a cozy hut in the forest with a pet crow, growing my own food and making witchy things sounds like my kind of party 🥳

My baby is going to wake up any second so it's an easy dish today! 🥒

You're not Slavic if you don't put a metric tonne of dill in literally everything. This dip has fresh dill, dill w**d AND chopped dill pickles. If you LOVE pickles like I do, you'd devour this like I'm about too 🤪

You can use this as a sauce, salad dressing OR dip. It's that good. ✨️

Hi I'm Molly and I'm the creator behind Bread, Salt & Water.

This began as a thought, a curious and nagging calling to know more about my ancestory and what makes me...me. I have always been resourcful and have started a few small businesses that were successful but ultimately not my passion. They fed my soul but not on a deep and passionate level and so began my journey, that finally led me here. To a passion project that encompasses many different themes - my love of the earth, my love for community and building roots from practices and traditions I can pass on to my children.

It all began when a stranger told me a Slavic spirit of a woman, adorned in a traditional Plotok ( Russian head scarf) was visiting her. She felt she was connected to me. She turned out to be my great grandmother Anastasia, whom I knew very little about. I knew my mother's, mother was Russian, specifically Doukhabor but I knew very little about what it meant to be a Doukhabor. This first encounter with Anastasia, plunged me swiftly into the biggest whirlwind of my life - bringing me a daughter, rattling my entire view of our consciousness, and desperately trying to learn what it all meant and why it was so important I know. It felt right, like my true path. I added up the pieces - traditions rooted in connection and family, my impulsive yet resourceful tendencies, and belonging to a community that promotes holistic well being. What did I have to loose?

Upon learning more about my ancestory, I learned that I was already doing a lot of what the Doukhabors practiced. At my core I am a pacifist, as well as a home gardener, forager, cook and a hands on creative. My family values include community support and it's always been a dream of mine to live communally with like minded people. I was already doing what this business is all about and I thought what a great way to spend quality time with my family and learning more about my ancestral roots than doing something like this. I am already a novice in building a small business that gathers revenue through Farmers Markets, my dad is a food broker and my mom was raised by a doukhabor mother. I had all the tools so, I took the leap!

Corn Dolly ✨️

I recently found this at a local thrift store and immediately thought of my Doukhabor grandmother. She has a few different shaped, dried wheat decorations in her home. I always thought they were reminders from her Saskatchewan up bringing. I never knew what they were or what they meant until I purchased this and read the explanation tag.

Kalachi 🎄

These Slavic Christmas cookies are usually folded into a pinwheel shape but I wanted to get the recipe right before I mastered another specialty fold 🫠😂

These cookies get their richness from 3 cups of sour cream.....wouldn't be Russian food if they didn't sneak sour cream into it 😅

My whole house smells like Santa's workshop 🎅
