Getting the first coat on new drywall is so crucial!!!
Here's why it's so important:
* Seals Porous Surfaces and Equalizes Absorption: New drywall is incredibly porous, and different areas (the paper surface, the joint compound/mud over seams and screw holes, and any scuffed areas) have varying levels of porosity. If you apply paint directly to unprimed drywall:
-The paint will be absorbed unevenly, leading to blotchy, dull, or inconsistent colours.
-The drywall mud will absorb paint differently than the paper, often resulting in "flashing" or "joint banding," where the seams and patches become visible under certain lighting angles.
-You'll likely need more coats of paint to achieve adequate coverage, wasting time and money.
* A good primer designed for new drywall, seals pores, creating a uniform, less absorbent surface for the paint to adhere to. Primer acts as a bonding layer between the drywall surface and the topcoat of paint. It creates a surface that the paint can "grip" onto better, preventing issues like:
-Peeling and chipping: Without good adhesion, the paint is more likely to flake off over time, especially in high-traffic areas.
-Wrinkling: Poorly adhering paint can sometimes wrinkle as it dries.
