He didn't want it hung up. He wanted it protected. 🏀

When this customer walked through our door, he was carrying something irreplaceable. A signed Canada basketball jersey, two signatures from players who meant everything to him, and years of memories attached to every thread.

He'd thought about a basic frame. Maybe something quick from a big-box store. But he kept coming back to the same feeling. this wasn't just a jersey. It was a piece of his story, and it deserved to be treated that way.

We built him a museum-grade shadowbox, archival double-matting in warm cream with a thin gold reveal, a matte charcoal frame, and a brushed brass name plaque. UV-protective glass to guard against fading. No cardboard. No tape. No shortcuts.

We see it more often than you'd think. Someone brings in a treasured photo, a military medal, or a piece of artwork they've held onto for decades. and somewhere along the way, it was stored in a frame that quietly did more harm than good.

The truth is, the materials inside your frame matter just as much as the frame itself. Here are three preservation must-haves we never skip at Expressions & Images:

✔️ Acid-free matting. Regular cardboard and paper mats contain acids that migrate into your artwork over time, causing yellowing, brittleness, and irreversible damage. Archival-grade, acid-free mat board creates a safe barrier between your piece and the elements.

✔️ UV-protective acrylic or glass. Everyday light. even the ambient light in your home. fades colours and degrades paper faster than most people realize. We use UV-filtering glazing that blocks up to 99% of harmful rays, so your piece looks as vivid in 30 years as it does today.

✔️ No glue, no tape on your artwork. This one surprises people. Many off-the-shelf frames use pressure-sensitive tapes or glues that bond directly to the piece. Removing them later can destroy what you were trying to protect. We use archival linen hinges and reversible mounting methods only.

Every frame tells a story. 🖼️

This week we're sharing a few pieces we're especially proud of, because sometimes the best way to show what we do is simply to let the work speak for itself.

First up. a heritage military jacket display, built as a tribute to a life of service. We used a deep shadowbox construction with museum-grade olive matting, a thin gold fillet, and a brushed brass nameplate to give this piece the gravitas it deserves. The jacket sits protected behind archival-quality materials, preserved for generations to come.

Beside it. a signed hockey jersey mounted with our full archival process. Double matting in deep blue and cream, an bold orange moulding, and UV-protective acrylic to guard against fading. Whether it's a childhood hero or a personal milestone, a jersey frame done right becomes a centrepiece.

And anchoring the wall. a dramatic classical painting set in an ornate gold frame, warm gallery lighting drawing out every detail of the brushwork.

"We finally framed it... and it feels like she's here with us." 🖼️

That's what one of our Edmonton clients said when she picked up her finished frame last week.

The photo had been sitting in a drawer for years. A simple snapshot of her daughter as a little girl, curly hair, a green blanket, a woven basket full of berries picked together on a summer afternoon. Nothing fancy. Just one of those ordinary moments that somehow becomes the most important one.

She brought it in for her mom's 80th birthday. She wanted it to feel special. Worthy of the memory.

We chose a premium matte black frame with a warm champagne inner edge, an archival off-white mat, and UV-protective glass to make sure that photo stays exactly as beautiful as the day it was taken. We added a small engraved plaque at the bottom: "For Grandma's 80th. the day we picked berries."

When she came to pick it up, she cried. We might have too. 🤍

Finished off with player imagery, team celebration photos, and detailed layout work, this piece became more than memorabilia — it became a statement piece.

✅ UV-protective glazing. Sunlight and indoor lighting both cause fading. UV glass blocks up to 99% of harmful rays, so the colours in your photo or artwork stay true.

✅ Archival backing board. The backing behind your piece matters just as much as what's in front of it. Archival board is stable, acid-free, and won't off-gas chemicals onto your artwork.
