NOW I understand why people stand in front of the same painting and forget to move.

At first glance that torn shape looks like a window but it isnt
Most people think the faces are looking through a hole. Like the paper is a wall and the people are on the other side peering through.
That is not what is happening.

Notice how that paper has been folded and refolded many times.
Look at the crack lines running through it.
Paper does not crack like that from being folded once. It cracks like that when someone folded it, put it away, picked it up again, almost did something with it, folded it back, put it away again over and over until the paper itself gave up and the fibres split.

The face they chose to represent it all? A woman who’d been long gone for over 500 years.
