For most of her life Frida Kahlo was named as ""Rivera's wife"" — a footnote to the most famous muralist in Mexico.

In 1949, while he was having an affair with her close friend, she painted Diego y yo: her own face in tears, his portrait pinned to her forehead like a thought she couldn't shake.

She sold almost nothing in her lifetime and died in 1954 still overshadowed.

In 2021 that same painting sold for $34.9 million — the most ever paid for a Latin American work, and more than three times Rivera's own auction record. The footnote outgrew the book.
