Have you tried a paint wash?
Instead of reaching for oil based stains you can tint or colour wash raw wood easily with paint diluted with water. Start by mixing 1 part paint with 3 part water💧 wipe on then wipe back the excess. Add a little more paint if you want a little more colour.
Once dry lightly sand to smooth any raised wood grain then seal with Ultra Guard poly finish.
