Another edition of Meg’s vintage vestibule.

And I’m throwing a wrench into it with my thoughts on how much a piece of vintage is worth based on where it was found.

As a lover of antiques from around the world and an avid traveller, many of my favourite pieces came from exploring or were found here by another experienced importer. And being good at importing antiques is no joke. It’s a whole lesson of chaos and shipping that requires a lot of learning, trial and error and moving parts, time, cleaning and work. It is also an extremely costly endeavor and not knowing what you’re doing makes for expensive mistakes.

But just because something comes from France or Portugal does not immediately make it more valuable than the same items found here. A well made piece by a good company has value no matter the country. Knowing where something originated from and the history behind it is one thing but valuing something solely based on where it was found might be problematic for the future of collecting. It’s a real fine line we have to walk as dealers and you as the end consumer but I’ve been seeing it more and more and it’s been on my mind.

Just some of my thoughts on the matter I suppose.

Enjoy viewing the pieces I brought back from Portugal with me and be apart of their next story. Antiques and vintage only get to be that way when someone loves them enough to spend time appreciating them.

1. The choices of fabrics never end and I always find one more to love.

2. Coffee and lint are a perfect pair

3. Threading an industrial overlock machine will require more patience than I’ll have if a thread breaks, because it’s always on the last pillow of the day.

4. I have opinions about zippers vs invisible zippers on most pillows for the way people actually use them.

5. Sewing velvet is still not my favourite but give the people what they want.

6. I’m not a fan of the big box trend that started with confusing people about what size pillow inserts they need instead of just fitting them properly to standard inserts.

7. Some people fall so deeply for a fabric they keep the same pillow for ten+ years and come back to show you how great it still is and make you proud to be apart of their home.

8. I can still remember the names of those 10 year old pillows.

9. An idea with a second hand sewing machine to make extra money while you’re a dental hygienist can turn into an entire retail store if you aren’t careful

Another round of vintage vestibule with this weeks star

A wicker fishing creel. Collecting vintage is about collecting stories and I’m sure this basket has a few to tell about quiet peaceful days down by the stream

Marked on the top British Hong Kong in origin it could have been made anywhere up to 1997.

It’s interesting to learn the use of things and where they were made. It’s so many factors coming together for the goods we choose for our home decor

I’ve loved these vintage baskets for years and this one is especially nice with all the original leather straps and buckles.

It seems most days like my job is about 30% treasure hunting and 70% cleaning someone else’s history.

Maybe wiggle the numbers to add dealing with shipping dynamics too 😉
