🇨🇦 ALBERTA NEWS | WHILE CARNEY BUILDS ALBERTA’S FUTURE, WHAT IS THE UCP DOING?
Let’s talk about the uncomfortable truth Albertans deserve to hear.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is putting Canada behind Alberta’s energy sector.
Ottawa has fast-tracked the proposed Pacific Link pipeline, a project designed to move up to 1 million barrels of Alberta oil per day to the West Coast, opening access to international markets and reducing Alberta’s dependence on the United States. Carney has called it a project of national interest and says it could create 140,000 jobs and generate more than $20 billion in annual GDP.
And yet, at this very moment, Alberta is facing a completely different political battle.
While Ottawa is talking about building bridges between Alberta and the rest of Canada, Alberta’s separatist movement is talking about breaking those bridges down.
And the questions surrounding Danielle Smith’s UCP are getting harder to ignore.
Recent reporting says Mitch Sylvestre, president of the Bonnyville-Cold Lake UCP constituency association, was involved in a meeting with U.S. Republican strategists seeking to assist Alberta’s separation movement. Smith’s office says the Premier had no knowledge of the meetings and that she opposes separation and Alberta becoming a U.S. state.
That leaves Albertans with a very simple question:
Why are people connected to the UCP involved in discussions with American political operatives about Alberta’s separatist movement while the federal government is actively working to build Alberta’s economy?
And there’s an even bigger issue.
Reported discussions involving separatists and U.S. officials have included claims about potentially trading Alberta resources for American support. Those claims have been disputed by people involved in the meetings, so Albertans should demand full transparency about exactly what was discussed.
Meanwhile, Mark Carney is standing in Alberta announcing a massive energy project that could give Alberta access to markets beyond the United States.
That is the irony.
🇨🇦 Canada is investing in Alberta.
🛢️ Canada is helping Alberta diversify its energy markets.
💰 Canada is helping create the conditions for billions of dollars in investment.
🤝 Canada is working with Alberta on a major national infrastructure project.
But Alberta’s political conversation is being consumed by separation, American political connections and questions about whether some people within the UCP orbit are working to weaken the very country that Alberta depends on.
Albertans should not have to choose between being proudly Albertan and proudly Canadian.
We can be both.
And before anyone asks Albertans to trust them with Alberta’s future, they should answer one question:
Who are you negotiating with, Canada, or America?
📢 Alberta deserves transparency. Alberta deserves accountability. Alberta deserves the truth.
