Flow Blue ~ An accident turned antique obsession

Did you know one of the most collectible china styles actually started as a total factory mistake?

Back in 1820s England, vapors in the kilns accidentally caused cobalt designs to bleed into the glaze. British makers initially hated the “defect,” but American buyers completely fell in love with that dreamy, hazy aesthetic. Talk about a happy accident! 💙

If you’re out hunting for Flow Blue today, the earliest pieces are heavy ironstone with deep, inky blues and romantic landscapes. Over time, the style softened into lush florals and lighter porcelain with gorgeous Art Nouveau embossing, before American potteries took over production through the 1940s.

Want to spot a true antique? Flip it over! Look for that dense, deep cobalt bleed and a Staffordshire maker’s mark.
