Here’s a quick look at a custom wooden porch build we’re currently wrapping up for a client right here in Halifax.
Where we’re at right now:
🔹 Structure is fully built and taking shape
🔹 Handrails are almost completed
🔹 Next up: installing the final balusters and completing the lower porch cladding/skirting
The unexpected twist? As the project evolved, it became clear that the entrance needed a smooth transition. So we’re expanding the scope! We will be handling the landscape prep and laying a proper concrete landing pad right where you step off the porch.

Building a custom porch isn’t just about putting boards together—it’s a continuous dialogue with the client to make sure every detail hits the mark. Here is a look behind the scenes at our step-by-step process:
Step 1: Structural Framing & Foundation
We tear down the old entry and anchor solid structural supports.
💬 Client check-in: "We evaluated the pitch and step height for optimal comfort—does this step rhythm feel natural for your daily entry?"
Step 2: Decking & Handrail Framework
The main wooden porch surface goes down, and primary rails are aligned.
💬 Client check-in: "The framework is set! Before we cap the handrails, let’s confirm your preferred top-rail width for a comfortable grip."
Step 3: Expanding Scope & Ground Transition (In Progress)
As the wood took shape, we noticed the step-off area needed proper footing.
💬 Client check-in: "Now that the main deck elevation is clear, the transition to the yard needs a permanent fix. Should we integrate site prep and a poured concrete landing pad directly into this phase?" (Client approved!)
Step 4: Final Touches (Coming Up Next)
Baluster installation, full lower cladding, and sealing the structure to endure Halifax weather.

🪵 Still removing paint… and still questioning my life choices. 😂

This staircase has years of old paint built up, and we’re carefully removing it step by step to prepare the wood for a new finish.

And while I’m doing this, I keep asking myself:

“What if we could just hit this with a super laser?” 🤔🔥

A fiber laser could probably make this job a whole lot faster… but until that technology shows up in the toolbox, it’s still scrapers, patience, paint remover, and a lot of hard work. 😅

Sometimes restoration is less about speed and more about doing it carefully without damaging the original wood.

☀️ A little summer nostalgia…

Looking back at this deck project we rebuilt in the middle of summer.

Those long summer days when you could start a demolition in the morning, rebuild everything, and make huge progress all in one day — with sunshine and good weather on your side. 🔨☀️

No freezing hands.
No early sunsets.
No checking the weather every few hours. 😄

Just long days, good weather, and getting the job done.

Already missing those summer deck days…

But don’t worry — winter will pass, and before we know it, it’ll be deck season again. 😉
