Good lighting isn't one fixture doing all the work. It's layers β and when one layer's missing, you feel it without knowing why.
Here's what the three layers are and where most homes get it wrong.
Layer 1 β Ambient
The base. Usually a ceiling fixture or recessed lights. Most homes stop here and call it done. That's the problem.
Layer 2 β Task
Directed light for where you actually work: under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen, a pendant over the island, a reading lamp that points where you read. Without this, you're working in your own shadow.
Layer 3 β Accent
The layer that makes a room feel finished β not bright, but intentional. Picture lights, cove lighting, a spot on artwork. This is what changes a room from functional to designed.
Most lighting plans have the first layer and maybe half of the second. Almost none have all three working together.
Save this. It'll matter before your next reno decision.
