Years after their arrival in Oregon, the eldest Carter daughter prepared for her wedding day. This soft and emotional photograph captures her walking across a wooden porch in a simple white dress, holding a bouquet of wildflowers—and she is barefoot. Her choice was a symbolic tribute to the journey that had defined her youth. She told her guests that she had already crossed the hardest ground barefoot, and she wanted to start her new life with the same strength and humility. The high-contrast black and white photography highlights the grace of her movement and the profound meaning behind her choice. Her story became a legend in their new community, a reminder of the family who pushed their way into history. This final image in the series is a testament to the lasting impact of our struggles and the way they shape the people we become. It reminds us that the scars of our past are not just marks of pain, but badges of honor that we carry with us into a brighter, more resilient future.
