🦇 Meet the Okanagan’s Bat Residents 🦇
From lakesides to desert valleys, the Okanagan is home to some incredible bat species:

✨ Little Brown Myotis: tiny, agile hunters that can eat 1,000 mosquitoes a night
✨ Yuma Bat: loves life near water, keeping aquatic insects in check
✨ Pallid Bat: a pale desert dweller that hunts beetles, grasshoppers, and more
✨ Spotted Bat: The Spotted Bat is considered to be one of the rarest North American bats. This extremely shy creature roosts in cliffs,
✨ Townsends Big-Eared bat: Large ears funnel sound into ear canal, and may also provide lift during flight and assist with temperature regulation.
Bats aren’t scary — they’re essential for healthy ecosystems and summer evenings without too many bugs. 🦟➡️🦇
Help give them safe places to roost with our handcrafted Cedar Bat Boxes, built right here in Kelowna.

Meet this weeks Bird of the Week; The Red-breasted Nuthatch is a lively little bird that adds charm and energy to the Okanagan’s forests year-round. With its rusty-orange belly, striking black-and-white face pattern, and bluish-gray back, it is easy to spot as it scurries up, down, and even upside-down along tree trunks in search of seeds and insects. Unlike most birds, nuthatches are uniquely skilled at moving headfirst down tree bark, probing crevices with their sharp bills. Their distinctive nasal “yenk-yenk” call is often heard before they’re seen, making them a delightful companion for hikers, gardeners, and birdwatchers alike. These resourceful birds are common visitors to backyard feeders, especially in winter, where they stash seeds away for later meals. They are also clever defenders of their nests, often smearing sticky pine resin around the entrance to deter predators. Although tiny, weighing less than half an ounce, these nuthatches migrate surprising distances when food supplies are scarce, showing just how resilient and adaptable they are in the wild.

🍂 September is here, but your garden season isn’t over yet! The cool Okanagan fall is perfect for planting hearty vegetables that thrive in crisp air and shorter days. Here are four top picks to get into the soil this month:

🥦 Broccoli: Loves the cool nights of September. Plant now for strong crowns that mature before the first frost.

🥬 Cabbage: A fall classic! Perfect for cooler weather, September plantings yield dense, sweet heads that store well.

🌱 Cauliflower: This one thrives with steady temperatures. Early September planting gives you firm, white curds just in time for fall harvest.

🌿 Brussels Sprouts: Patience pays off with these! Plant in September for sprouts that sweeten after the first frost.

Cool-season vegetables love this time of year: pair them with our handcrafted cedar planters to extend your growing space and add beauty to your garden.

Meet this week’s Bird of the Week🐦 The enigmatic Varied Thrush! Native to the shadowy, old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, this beautifully patterned thrush brings a touch of mystery with its slaty-gray back, fiery orange breast, and haunting, echoing whistles. More often heard than seen, its song has been described as “the voice of cool, dark serenity” a perfect soundtrack to our conifer-filled wilderness. In summer, it forages through leaf litter for insects; in winter, it turns to berries and seeds, even visiting backyard feeders. Though majestic, numbers have declined due to habitat loss and window strikes, making every sighting feel like a rare gift. Have you caught a glimpse, or heard its ethereal song in your own backyard?

Did you know? Most bats only have one baby - or ‘pup’ - per year! 🦇 And here’s the sweetest part: a newborn bat can weigh up to one-third of its mother’s body weight!! Imagine a human mom giving birth to a child that heavy!
These tiny pups cling to their mothers with strong little claws and call out using sound and scent so mom can always find them in a crowded maternity roost. 💛
But here’s the hard truth: only about half of bat pups survive their first winter. That’s why safe roosts like our handcrafted cedar bat boxes make such a difference - every pup matters.
Let’s celebrate these little wonders and give them a sanctuary that helps our ecosystems thrive.
