Interior design and decorating are both valuable—but they solve different problems.

Interior design shapes the home itself. It considers how spaces function, how they connect, how natural light moves throughout the day, and how every architectural and material decision supports the people living there.

Decorating comes later. It layers personality into the space through furniture, artwork, textiles, lighting, and accessories that make a house feel like home.

At Studio Kaiser, we believe the most beautiful homes begin with thoughtful design. When the layout, materials, and details are considered from the start, every piece that follows has a purpose, and the result is a home that feels as good as it looks.

Built in 1969, this home underwent a renovation in the mid-2000s. Together with our clients, we're thoughtfully restoring it room by room, honouring its original character while introducing the comforts of modern living.

The guest bathroom was the first step. Through colour drenching in calming blue-green tones, brushed brass plumbing fixtures, clear cedar trim, large-format ivory floor tile, and vertically stacked wall tile, we created a space that feels both nostalgic and refreshed.

Studio Kaiser led the bathroom design, procurement, and project management, ensuring every detail reflected both the home's history and our clients' vision.

Every successful renovation starts with solving the right problems.

For this bungalow renovation, currently in-progress, our goal was to make the kitchen feel bigger (without adding any square footage) and make it work better for my clients.

The original layout featured a U shaped kitchen with an awkward peninsula, an unused breakfast nook, limited storage, and a bathroom that took up more space than it needed to. Instead of defaulting to an open concept layout, we took a different approach.

We introduced a dedicated pantry wall and concealed the kitchen from the front entry, creating a more intentional first impression while adding valuable storage. A nine foot island became the heart of the home, complete with thoughtful details like a built up shelf that keeps everyday dishes mess out of sight.

In the bathroom, we reworked the layout to improve circulation, added a larger six foot tub, and selected a smaller custom-oak vanity that gives the room room to breathe.

Throughout the home, existing oak flooring was seamlessly integrated with new millwork details to create a cohesive feel, while carefully planned lighting adds warmth and function to every space.

One of our favourite parts of this project was developing detailed 3D renderings, giving the homeowners the confidence to visualize every decision before construction began.

The biggest renovation mistakes usually happen before construction ever begins.

And this is because the wrong questions are often asked from the start.

Too often, homeowners choose finishes before they've solved how their home should function.

They assume the existing layout can't change. Or they wait until everything is decided before bringing in a designer.

The result? Beautiful spaces that still don't work the way they should.

At Studio Kaiser, we believe great design starts with a plan. Before selecting materials or choosing paint colours, we look at how you live, how your space flows, and where thoughtful changes can make the biggest impact.

Sometimes the best investment isn't a more expensive finish.

It's making the right decisions early.

If you're planning a renovation or new build, we'd love to help you create a home that feels as good as it looks.

Most people think a renovation starts with choosing finishes.

We think it starts with asking better questions.

How do you want your home to function?
Where does your current layout fall short?
What decisions today will save you time, money, and frustration later?

A well planned renovation isn't about spending more. It's about making intentional decisions before construction begins.

At Studio Kaiser, we help homeowners create a clear roadmap before the first wall comes down, so every decision that follows has purpose.

Because the best renovations don't start with a mood board.

They start with a plan.

The northern community of Iqaluit, Nunavut was in need of a casual coffee house with a relaxed atmosphere and delicious menu. From concept to final completion, this project from 2018 is one of my first commercial projects.

This Tenant Improvement project included creative concept development, visual identity & branding (the same bright yellow can be found on the take-out coffee cup lids), lighting, furniture and space planning. Through a carefully selected material palette, the outcome is a sunny and inviting coffee shop. As a multi-use space, Black Heart Cafe also caters private gatherings & community events.

Homeowners who DIY their design projects are often full of regrets…

Not because people don’t have good taste, but because design decisions are deeply interconnected, and when they’re made in isolation, the bigger picture starts to fall apart.

Here are the top 5 regrets I see all the time:

- Choosing finishes in isolation. A beautiful tile or countertop can feel completely different once it’s placed next to cabinetry, flooring, and lighting that weren’t considered together.
- No clear overall plan before starting often leads to a disjointed home where each space works individually, but nothing feels cohesive from room to room.
- Prioritizing trends over longevity. What feels current today can date quickly when it isn’t grounded in timeless design principles.
- Misjudging DIY complexity is another big one. What seems like a simple decision or project often involves far more coordination, sequencing, and technical detail than expected.
- And finally, trying to do it all alone can lead to overwhelm, costly revisions, and a lack of clarity when decisions start stacking up quickly.

When clients work with us at Studio Kaiser, the goal is to avoid exactly this by establishing a clear design direction from the start, curating materials and finishes as a cohesive system, and guiding each decision so the space feels intentional, functional, and timeless from day one.

This laundry and mud room was in need of a contemporary refresh, so we focused on creating a space that feels both hardworking and refined.

Baltic birch plywood and laminate were selected for a durable, budget-conscious millwork upgrade, while a two-tone laminate countertop and backsplash introduce depth and visual interest.

To elevate the everyday experience of the space, we incorporated a monochromatic sink and faucet from Blanco, bringing a cohesive and understated aesthetic to this highly functional room.

A thoughtful transformation proves that even the most functional spaces deserve beautiful design.

One thing my clients always ask me…

How do you make a space feel cohesive, timeless, and still personal?

My answer? That’s my whole job.

Most clients come to me because they want help pulling everything together. Materials, layout, lighting, furnishings, colour, texture… all the smaller details that make a space feel intentional.

They’re also looking for clarity, direction, and someone who can translate ideas into a space that actually feels like them— only more elevated, refined, and cohesive than they could’ve imagined on their own.

At the end of the day, my goal is always the same: to create spaces that people genuinely feel good in. Spaces that feel natural to visit or live in, connected to who they are, and thoughtfully designed down to the smallest detail.

Furniture can change the entire feeling of a space.

A few pieces from our Marda Loop Townhouse project remind us furniture is never just functional. It carries scale, character, and presence that can shift the energy of a room instantly.

A unique piece introduces contrast and personality into the composition of a space. It becomes the detail that draws you in.
