What happens when the world of Middle-earth meets the world of quilting?

Inspired by the banners of Rohan from The Lord of the Rings, this commissioned banner brings together traditional piecing and a creative piecework technique to create a design rich in detail and spiritual symbolism.

As I worked, I found ways to weave layers of Christian symbolism into the design. Some are visible; others are tucked into the details, waiting to be discovered.

I like to save my favourite M&M colour combinations until the end. Often it is red and brown, sometimes with a splash of blue.

As I was piecing, the name of this Candy Coated quilt made me realize I was doing something similar with my scraps: warm browns, soft reds and pinks, and little bits of blue.

It felt a bit like sorting candy. And maybe that’s why this quilt feels so cozy :-).

What colours do you save for the end?

Real-time trimming of half-square triangles with the Bloc Loc ruler. And if you’re wondering about the yellow tool, that is a safety push block, normally used for woodworking, that reduces my tendency to tennis elbow.
