On offer is a prospectus for The Howard Vincent Map of the British Empire. This is for the 14th edition issued to commemorate the Anglo-French Treaty of Arbitration and Friendship signed in 1903.
The cartographer is G.H. Johnston. The map shows “possessions throughout the World of the British people in the Reign of King Edward VII.” In addition, there’s “an inset chart of the World showing the development of the Empire since 1797.”
The map is dedicated to Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, along with the Premiers of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Natal, and Newfoundland. It “has been designed to show the British People of To-day and To-morrow, in all School-rooms, Colleges, Imperial and Municipal Offices, Public Institutions. Clubs, Free Libraries, and Private Studies, the extent of the British Empire, and its infinite Commercial Value to the Mother Country.” The publisher goes on to say that “no Briton should be brought up without a full knowledge of the Empire bequeathed to him by his Fathers. No School or Public Institution is therefore complete without this Map.”
This copy of the prospectus was issued by The Steinberger, Hendry Co. of Toronto. They’re identified as the “sole agents for the Dominion of Canada for W. & A.K. Johnston, Limited, who are the makers of the Howard Vincent wall map.
The prospectus measures 8 ¾ “ x 11 ¼ “. There is printed text on one side, while on the other is a “reduced” image of the wall map in color. The map measures 7 ½ “ x 10 “ to the neat line. It’s engraved and printed by W. & A.K. Johnston, Limited, Edinburgh & London.
The prospectus shows three vertical folds which have been reinforced with transparent archival mending paper. The paper shows minor foxing and age toning. There is edge wear and creasing. In addition, there is a small area of paper loss in the margin at one corner. Overall, we rate the condition as fair.
