If you’re my client, prepare for a result that’s been thought through down to the smallest detail.

If you’re a contractor who wants to work with me… prepare to be asked to do things you probably never expected to be discussing on site. 😂

At our Youthful Project, we’re using three different tiles in the shower, which naturally led to the next question: do we use three different grout colours too?

Technically? More work.
Visually? So worth considering.

When you’re working with multiple tile colours, grout can completely change how each one reads. A single grout colour may tie everything together, while separate grout colours can let each tile have its own moment and keep the transitions feeling intentional.

Then there’s the niche, the grout lines, the meeting points between colours… all the tiny details that somehow turn into a full site discussion. 😂

And yes, sometimes the final design decision may require a little contractor bribery.

Coffee? Donuts? We’ll negotiate🍩☕️

But if the detail improves the final result, you can bet I’m going to ask the question.

I’m completely over the black-and-white kitchen formula.

White cabinets. Black island. Black hardware. White stone with dramatic black veining. We’ve seen the combination everywhere, and at some point “timeless” started to look a lot like “expected.”

Give me warm oak, softer stone, aged brass, handmade tile, plaster, texture, grain, or a deep muddy green over automatically reaching for black.

If you love white cabinetry, great. There are so many ways to warm it up and give the room more depth and personality.

Going into 2027, I think we’re going to see more tonal contrast, nuanced colour, interesting stone, natural materials, and spaces that feel collected over time.

Thoughtful choices are what give a kitchen longevity.

And if you already have a black-and-white kitchen, look at what you could layer in to soften it, warm it up, and make it feel more like home.

A renovation budget gets more accurate as the design gets more detailed.

Early in the process, we can look at the scope, priorities and similar projects to establish a realistic investment range. An accurate project estimate comes later, once the design has been developed.

This becomes especially important with larger renovations or builds. Structural changes, additions, rooflines, foundations, new openings and major layout changes can all affect the scope significantly.

Before contractors and trades can price the project accurately, they need clear information to price from. That may include finalized architectural or engineering drawings showing the dimensions, structural requirements, materials and construction details.

Without that information, everyone is essentially pricing a moving target.

Budget conversations still happen from day one. They help us guide the design, prioritize where to invest and make informed decisions as the project develops.

Design → Finalized Drawings → Detailed Scope → Trade Pricing → Project Estimate

The more extensive the renovation, the more important that process becomes.

Project Natura is complete, and this bathroom is such a good example of how much planning can sit behind a space that feels effortless in the end.

The toilet relocation was one of the biggest technical challenges. Moving plumbing diagonally meant working carefully around the existing joist direction and finding a placement that still supported the overall layout.

Then came the details we’d been waiting to see together: the barrier-free shower, crosshatch tile, arched glass, discreet linear drain, and that travertine countertop. The stone brought exactly the warmth and texture the room needed.

Custom millwork gave us wall-to-wall storage designed specifically for the clients, while some of our favourite upgrades are the ones you barely notice at first - heated floors and those sleek heated towel bars.

There were a lot of decisions, adjustments, and problem-solving moments behind this bathroom, but seeing everything come together made all of that work worth it.

And yes… I would very happily take this bathroom for myself. 😂

When people think about what makes a great interior designer, they usually think about creativity, an eye for colour, space planning, and knowing how to pull a room together.

All of that matters. But one of the most important skills is much easier to overlook:

Listening.

We need to understand how our clients live, what frustrates them, what they love, what they want to keep, and even the things they haven’t quite figured out how to explain yet.

Often, the smallest comments shape the biggest decisions.

“We always gather around the island.”
“This room has never felt comfortable.”
“That piece has to stay.”

Those details help us understand what the home really needs.

Listening also means knowing when to guide, when to ask more questions, and when to revisit a decision as the project evolves.

One of the best things a client can say at the end is:

“This feels like us.”

That’s always the goal.

Project Natura is at that stage where the details we’ve been planning for months are finally starting to show up.

For this bathroom, we fell in love with the colour of a simple rectangular tile, but we knew a standard layout wouldn’t give the shower the impact we wanted.

So we’re installing it in a crosshatch pattern.

It looks effortless when it’s finished, but this type of layout takes a lot of precision. The grout lines need to stay consistent, the pattern needs to remain perfectly aligned, and the placement has to be planned carefully so awkward cuts don’t end up in the places your eye naturally lands.

That’s something we think about long before the first tile goes on the wall:
where the pattern begins, how it wraps, where the cuts fall, and how it relates to niches, fixtures and the rest of the room.

A simple tile can feel completely different depending on how you use it.

And this shower is about to become one of our favourite moments in Project Natura.

If we were deciding where to put more of the renovation budget, these are the things we’d keep on the list.

Custom millwork that solves real storage problems.
A lighting plan worked out before the walls are closed.
Stone you’ll see and use every day.
Full-height window treatments that completely change the scale of a room.
And a layout that’s been properly resolved before construction begins.

These are the decisions that tend to have the biggest impact long after the renovation is finished. They affect how the home functions, how it feels to live in, and how well everything else comes together.

There will always be places to pull back and places worth investing more. Knowing the difference early can save a lot of second-guessing later.

Small bathrooms have to work harder, which is why storage matters so much.

At our project, we’re using every available inch without making the room feel crowded. An inset medicine cabinet keeps everyday essentials within reach, while a hidden recessed cabinet above the toilet adds extra storage without projecting into the space.

When storage is planned properly from the beginning, even a compact bathroom can feel open, organized, and full of personality.

Smart storage can completely change how a small space functions day to day.

These are the kinds of fall colour combinations we come back to when we want a room to feel warmer, deeper, and a little more layered.

Think navy with camel. Deep green with muted terracotta. Burgundy with chocolate brown. Rust with inky blue.

They feel seasonal, but they don’t read as “fall décor.” The colour is already built into the room through upholstery, millwork, rugs, wallpaper, and wood tones, so the palette still works long after the season changes.

We love combinations that have enough contrast to keep a space interesting, while still feeling easy to live with.

And sometimes the best fall palette is already sitting in your home - you just need to know which colours to pull forward.

There’s a certain kind of confidence that comes with walking onto a site, looking at a room full of trades, and saying, “No, we’re changing that.”

Interior design puts us right in the middle of construction conversations, technical decisions, site issues, and a lot of moving parts. Sometimes that means questioning something that’s already been built. Sometimes it means catching a detail before it becomes a bigger problem. Sometimes it means standing your ground when you know the design needs something different.

It takes a strong point of view, clear communication, and a lot of respect for the people bringing the work to life.
