quiet encounter at Aldergrove Park.

Not long ago, we spotted an owl tucked among the branches, sitting so still that it would have been easy to walk right past without noticing it.

Moments like that stay with me.

This small painting was inspired by that encounter and became a chance to explore colour, pattern, and presence in a way that feels true to how I experience wildlife.

Sometimes the animals that leave the biggest impression aren’t the ones making the most noise.

Some of my best studio days begin outside.

Today started with a quiet moment captured in a photo, followed by a paddle through some truly beautiful scenery. Being on the water has a way of slowing everything down and helping me notice the changing light, reflections, and the peaceful rhythm of the landscape.

These moments almost always find their way back into my work somehow.

Creative fuel for the week ahead. 🌿

Hi Alley Kat!

I’m Sheryl Stephenson, the artist behind Wild Hues Studio in Langley, BC.

I create bold, colourful wildlife artwork inspired by the animals of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.

My work has been featured in exhibitions, educational projects, and licensing initiatives, and I love exploring creative collaborations that bring art into unexpected places.

Thanks for the opportunity to share my work. 🍻

In case you’re new here, I’m Sheryl — the artist behind Wild Hues Studio.

I paint BC wildlife in bold, expressive colour because I want people to stop for a moment, notice the animal in front of them, and feel that connection to the wild places around us.

Lately I’ve been working on smaller pieces and submissions, but the heart of it is still the same:

colour, wildlife, and that moment of presence.

Thanks for being here. 💛

I revisited this wolf and changed the background.

After some helpful feedback, I realized he needed a stronger sense of footing — something that matched the presence and strength of the wolf itself.

The purple ground felt like the right shift.

Sometimes a painting isn’t finished… it’s just waiting for you to see what it needs.

What do you think — stronger with the purple?

I love the idea of all those colourful little marks becoming puzzle pieces.
This piece is called Drifting Curiosity and was inspired by the quiet magic of BC wildlife.

Steady Ascent
5x7 acrylic paint pen on paper

This little mountain goat was just submitted, along with my small 8x10 orca painting, to the Federation of Canadian Artists’ international mail-in call for art, Inspiration.

I’ve always loved mountain goats — the sure-footedness, the wild places they belong to, and that quiet strength they seem to carry.

This one felt like a good fit for the theme.

Now we wait and see. 💛

A few smaller works from the studio this week.

I’ve been working on a series of small wildlife pieces — partly for submissions, partly because I love how much energy can fit into a small space.

There’s something about working small that makes every colour choice feel more intentional.

Two finished, one more underway.

Which one catches your eye first?
