Working with the stock list, Jonny is transferring the rough lumber into finished parts, less the joinery. First he crosscuts and rips the parts out, slightly over sized, then flattens one side, thickness planes the other and joints a straight edge. Next, at the table saw, he rips and crosscuts each piece. Finally, he hand planes the parts to get rid of the planer and saw marks.

I’m a big believer in first drawing almost everything I build, often full size. It gives me the opportunity to work out the proportions, construction and dimensions . I get to solve problems and find mistakes. I make my mistakes on paper and fix them with an eraser instead of reworking or wasting the actual parts. When I’m happy with the drawing I make patterns of the complex parts and generate a stock list.
