Will painting a dark colour make my room feel oppressive? Not necessarily. My own basement has dark brick and black walls in the majority of the room, white on the rest of the walls. I have only one window down there, so not a lot of natural light.... The flood that started this re-do of our lower level is 3 years ago already and I will say that what made it oppressive before was the lack of warmth, lack of design, lack of personality, lack of decor, and lack of layered lighting...

This hardwood floor was bought on clearance Metropolitan and it's perfect! Why? Because it's a smooth surface, it's sturdier than doubling up on plywood, and it's cheaper!
Yes it's in a barn, yes boots are on it, but I can't think of what else you'd want to dance on!? Only good times ahead!

Even though we didn't really want this cutie-pie in our photoshoot, we couldn't stop taking photos of him! He's so CUTE! We do want you to take your four legged companion into consideration when you're picking flooring though.

Bring your natural oak cabinets back to life: White walls really brighten up the space, flooring that has some warm tones but overall have a grey "wash" to them, accent with a dark colour, and use brushed nickel hardware. The white counters and the white tile definitely brighten the whole space as well, allowing the oak to stand out and hold their own.

Balancing modern things (like the metal + velvet island stools, the dark vertical shiplap, light fixtures) with the traditional cabinetry is a great way to bring them forward in time rather than stuck in "old lady era".
