One week left in the countdown till we have a yes or no to our potential meteorite find, if it’s a yes, it means amazing things for our area. If it’s a no, the iron ore project will continue and create amazing things!

Sorry folks, we are currently delayed on this project as this may be a meteorite we have uncovered. Waiting to hear back in the next 4 weeks to determine if it’s worth sending a sample for analysis.

Evening yall! The iron ore project is on hold until the spring, cold temps make smelting extremely hard, we may try to make some charcoal here or there but for now we will be hibernating 😊

Full barrel charcoal burn! She’s a little smoky but so far working great!

Charcoal is done, yielding about 2.5lbs or 25% weight of original wood weight.

We are planning on using the ancient bloomery technique, practically it’s a large hollow clay furnace that is fueled with forced air through the bottom using bellows and the iron ore and charcoal is added in alternation through the top. (Not my drawing).

So we are going to need to harvest and clean a bunch o clay for this project, stay tuned we will show you how it’s done!

In order to get our temperatures high enough to smelt iron ore, we need charcoal. Thankfully we built this rudimentary charcoal maker many years ago.

In a process called pyrolysis we will cook wood in a semi-sealed container to 800C in the absence of oxygen, this leaves us a nice clean carbon to burn with called charcoal.

For an iron smelt the temperature will need to climb to upwards of 1800C. (For reference aluminum smelts at around 700C)
