Our first workshop has come and gone, and we’re feeling grateful for how it all came together.

Wela’lin to Charles Favel for travelling to our home fire and sharing his knowledge with our young people. The energy all week showed….lots of laughs, good questions, and our youth taking pride in creating something meaningful.

One thing that stood out is the talent in our community. Our young women, our makers and artists, did an amazing job on their roaches, and our young men, our dancers, showed that same focus and care. We now have 10 new roach makers here in Unama’ki.

Welalin the Circle of Care Department, especially Terri-Anne and my brother James, for helping bring this workshop to life.

To Janine Christmas, thank you for the space and patience all week

And toGrace Francis, huge wela’lin for keeping everyone fed. The food was incredible every day.

Once again, wela’lin to Charles Favel for the time and heart he continues to put into this work all across Indian Country. Was a super deadly weekend here in Membertou.

This workshop is full! Just sharing for the memories.

📣 CALL OUT - MEMBERTOU YOUTH 📣

Sa’qati Collective is seeking Membertou youth (30 & under) who are interested in participating in an intensive 4 day Powwow roach making workshop.

We are looking for:
- Powwow dancers
- Youth who want to start dancing but don’t know where to begin
- Makers and artists interested in learning this traditional craft

Participants will learn the process of making a powwow dance roach and each person will take home their very own at the end of the workshop.

***SPOTS ARE LIMITED***

This will be a trial run of this workshop, and our hope is to bring the facilitator back in the future to offer similar opportunities in other communities across Unama’ki.

📅 This is an intensive four-day workshop and commitment to attend all days is required.
🍽 Meals will be provided each day.

If you’re interested, send us a message or comment below and tag someone who you think would be interested.

Let’s continue building culture and supporting the next generation of dancers and makers.

🌿 Why I Started Sa’qati Collective 🌿

For a long time I’ve believed that culture is strongest when it’s shared. Not just talked about, but experienced….through art, stories, and hands-on learning.

That’s why I started Sa’qati Collective.

The idea is to create space for people to come together and explore Mi’kmaq culture through workshops, creativity, and community projects. Some things will be small, some things will grow bigger over time.

But it all starts somewhere.

If you believe in supporting Mi’kmaq culture and community-driven projects, I’d really appreciate your help getting the word out.

Wela’lin to everyone who’s already shown support.

I wanted to introduce something I’ve been thinking about for a long time…. Sa’qati Collective.

In Mi’kmaw, Sa’qati means needle. In our clans, our last name Doucette is often connected to spruce needles. That’s where the idea for the logo came from…the spruce needles represent our roots, our people, and the land that continues to teach us.

Sa’qati Collective is just the beginning of something I’ve wanted to build for a while. A space for Mi’kmaw culture, art, learning, and community projects. Things like workshops, cultural sharing, and creative work that keeps our traditions alive while bringing people together.

This page will be where I share projects, events, and ideas as they come together. Nothing fancy, just good work, good people, and culture.

If you’re interested in collaborating, learning, or bringing workshops to your community, feel free to reach out.
