It's been a bit of a less-than-productive end of 2023/start of 2024 for me as my 13 year old pomeranian, Oliver, has been dealing with some health issues since Christmas. But things are looking up! We think π€
He was totally fine Christmas day and was having a grand ol' time getting all the pets and sneaking some turkey as we were having a really nice christmas dinner with Michael's family. The next morning, we noticed he had an accident of diarrhea in my art room and he was wanting to sleep a lot more than usual - something we just thought was due to being fed the turkey. Over the next day or so, we noticed he wasn't eating but was drinking a lot. Despite being taken outside to go p*e as usual, he had about 5 p*e accidents in the house. He refused to do anything but sleep and randomly fell on his side at one point and wouldn't stand up on his own. We of course took him to the vet where he had bloodwork done and the vet put him on antibiotics and other medication in the meantime. The bloodwork showed that his creatinine levels had skyrocketed, indicating something was going on with his kidneys. She didn't sound too hopeful over the phone, which did not do my mental health any good lol. I don't think I've ever cried as much than I have that night thinking this might be the end for my Oliver. Luckily, over the next few days of taking his antibiotics and getting more love than I think a dog ever has, he has perked right back up and is chasing the cats again π
I spoke with the vet today and based on the urinalysis results, she believes he is dealing with acute renal failure due to something he ingested on Christmas day. We have no idea what this may have been, but she sounds pleasantly surprised by his bounce back. For now, things are looking good and hopefully I will be back to regular business! If I drop off again, it'll likely be because I'm taking care of my boy. If anyone has had experience with their dog or cat dealing with kidney disease/failure or something that sounds similar to what oli has been dealing with, please feel free to message me!
