What began in 2000 as a childcare program for just 54 participants has blossomed into an initiative that has supported thousands of employees and their families.

Through programs focused on health promotion, education, prevention, housing and literacy, the initiative continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who make the floral industry thrive.

And the journey continues! With a commitment to finding new and innovative ways to support its employees, the program is growing, evolving and creating opportunities for a brighter future.

Mex Y Can celebrates the initiatives of Elite Flower Group as they support their employees in such impactful ways.

This International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the incredible women whose hard work, knowledge and leadership help grow communities, protect biodiversity and safeguard our planet for future generations.
This year’s theme, “Rural Women Farmers Caring for Mother Nature,” reminds us that women are at the heart of sustainable agriculture. 
We also salute our incredible flower growers who recognize that when women are empowered, entire communities flourish.
Through their commitment to social responsibility, our grower partners are creating opportunities for women to thrive by initiatives like :
-Fair wages and safe working environments
-Education, training and career advancement
-Childcare and family support
-Women’s health initiatives, including Pap smears and breast cancer screening
-Scholarships and educational opportunities for employees’ children
-Transportation to and from work
-Microloans that support financial independence and entrepreneurship
Growing beautiful flowers is about so much more than what blooms in the fields and greenhouses. It’s about nurturing the people and communities behind every stem.

Saturday is World Mental Health Day

What does Mental Health have to do with flowers you might ask?

Well, way more than you might expect especially when you work with growers that care about the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of their employees like we do.

Our grower partners are focused on people, not just the operation and productivity of their flower farms. They recognize that they are nothing without their teams.

Many of our growers:
-have onsite social workers whose only job is to support the needs of the employees outside of their day-to-day job
-provide onsite mental health supports and do regular check ins with each employee
-provide supports and services that take away day-to-day worries ie. medical, dental and child care services
-provide financial support through microfinance loans for household emergencies and scholarships to help employees support the education of their children

Growers prove their commitment to these types of programs time and time again by investing in certification programs that hold them to account every single year. These are not mandatory. They do this because they care.

We keep talking about grower certifications but what exactly does it all mean?

The work being done by our grower partners to be more sustainable, eco-friendly and socially responsible is really, really impressive. It's a real commitment of time, money and resources.

We've created a handy dandy guide for you to learn more about some of the certifications we've been talking about.

Even if you take the time to learn about just one certification, you will feel really good about your future flower purchases knowing the care and diligence taken by our growers and in turn by MexYCan to deliver "beautiful flowers, responsibly grown" to floral shops across Canada.

October is Fair Trade Month

Our grower partner is just one of the many flower growers we work with that are Fair Trade Certified. So what does this mean exactly?

Becoming Fair Trade Certified is a real commitment for growers - both financially and philosophically in how they run their operation.

Fair Trade means:

Producers are protected by a minimum price, providing greater financial stability when market prices fall.

Farmers and workers receive additional funds that can be invested in priorities such as education, healthcare, community programs and farm improvements.

Stringent standards promote safe working conditions, protect workers’ rights and prohibit forced and child labour.

Farming practices are sustainable, there's better waste management and a dedicated protection of biodiversity.

Fair Trade means that the flowers for life’s most important moments are grown with care for people and the planet.
