Turkey vultures spend their summers on Vancouver Island. They can often be seen soaring above looking for carrion. They find their meals by scent. Their powerful stomach enzymes allow them to safely consume and digest carrion, even meat contaminated with dangerous bacteria and toxins.

Our resident quail was hanging out in the cherry tree yesterday. He froze like this for a while when a hawk flew into the top of the tree. Once the hawk left he relaxed and went on his way.
