โBut why do I always feel like Iโm in the Twilight Zone?โ
โ hits hard, because for a big part of my life, I actually was.
โDo you celebrate the day of the devil?โ
Thatโs literally what I was taught growing up.
Halloween wasnโt just discouraged โ it was considered a direct celebration of Satan himself.
I was told anyone who dressed up, carved pumpkins, or even took part in a classroom party would face Godโs wrath.
As a kid, I couldnโt understand how dressing up like a princess or a pumpkin meant worshiping the devil.
I got that demonic costumes werenโt exactly good vibes, butโฆ really? Eternal damnation for glitter and candy? ๐ญ
Yet I believed it. Deep down, I was terrified โ and even more, I was jealous.
When I had Izaak, I promised myself Iโd never let him feel bad for something as harmless and fun as Halloween.
We went all in โ costumes, candy, decorations.
I smiled, I laughedโฆ but Iโll be honest, that old programming never went away.
There was always a loud voice in the back of my mind whispering that Iโd pay the price โ not just for me, but for allowing my child to celebrate such an โevil day.โ
It took years to silence that fear โ only until recently, in fact.
Now, I see Halloween for what it really is: creativity, laughter, connection, and a lot of chaos.
I love seeing the cute costumes, the wildly creative ones, the over-the-top decorations, the laughably tacky ones, and the excuses people make for truly horrible costumesโฆ
aka โhow many pl***oy bunnies and dirty cops will we see this year?โ ๐
So even though I donโt get trick-or-treaters where I live, this year I decided to decorate anyway โ just one little, minimalistic, but charming setup in my front entryway.
A quiet rebellion.
A way to say Happy Halloween, however you choose to celebrate (or not). ๐
Because sometimes healing looks like hanging $15 worth of decorations on your porch, smiling, and realizing youโre finally free. ๐ค
How do you celebrate Halloween? Show me your costumes and decorations โ Iโd love to see them! ๐ป
