An overdue note to my followers regarding Spade & Sparrow’s discontinuation of bespoke design work. Because the truth is, I personally have loved the expansion into a larger studio space here in Niagara’s south coast.
When a design was well-received, many have heard me say, “I’m only ever as good as the product I have to work with”. The truth is- I can no longer excel at what I do when accessible materials have dried up. And they have. Why? Well.. this isn’t a political post. But even my best clients would lift an eyebrow if I shared what I’d now have to charge per project after inflation, exchange, and tariffs. For the same reason, my buying trips south of the border have ceased. And why were they important? Quality assurance in my own hands. When I purchased shipments online during the pandemic, I was left with too much product that looked nice online, but was not to a standard I consider acceptable.
Secondly, my GTA suppliers have either down-sized significantly or closed completely post-pandemic. I did purchase what I could before this. Shelves once over-flowing with selection are empty or have seemingly vanished in the night. Our national gift show is.. stale. Everyone has tightened their belts.
Thirdly, shipping and delivery. The pandemic taught everyone how to shop online. Free shipping now an expectation. The reality of small businesses is, that the shipping or delivery fuel cost on a product is now often equal to what would be the profit on that product. It doesn’t work.
And lastly, some of my earlier curated decor vendors now stock the leading online selling platform. I now see versions of my craft watered down at big box hardware stores. At the end of the day, sadly, many can’t tell the difference outside the price tag.
Will I continue to compose faux designs? Yes.. with product that speaks to me when and where I can source it. Custom work is no longer a service in short, because I cannot guarantee cost and selection of specific varieties.
I thought I would really miss town living. I haven’t. I thought I wouldn’t miss the demand of perpetually merchandising a shop. I do. So with that, I have exciting news to share in the coming post. 💐😉E.
