2024 Design Trends Day Six : Murals

Sticking with the theme of “personality rich” spaces for 2024, we’re seeing a departure from traditional wallpaper and a move towards larger scale murals as a way to bring a sense of individuality to the home. In years gone by murals have been a hard sell because they require a big commitment and they’re very expensive to have installed/painted, but with the forever growing DIY industry, there are now 1000s of peel and stick options available that can be installed by anyone with a bit (aka a LOT) of patience.

✨ Ways to use a mural in your space ✨

✨ We’ll forever love a good mural as a feature wall in a bedroom. Fun fact, if you happened to catch the movie “Leave the World Behind”, you’ll notice the mural in the master bedroom changes with every scene, as the movie progresses!

✨ Do you have a large stairway wall that’s just screaming for design help? Try a mural! Install becomes a bit more tricky, especially if you have rounded walls, however a mural going up the stairs can be a spectacular add to a space.

✨ Powder rooms are the PERFECT spot for a mural as well, and be BOLD with it. Mural that ceiling! You can save on cost by adding a chair rail midway up the wall and painting a complementary colour below the mural.

2024 Design Trends Day 5 : Checkerboards & Stripes

Stripes and checkerboard patterns are H-O-T (again!) and the more over-the-top you can be with it the better! What’s standing out the most with the 2024 design trends, is that we’re seeing a big move towards “personality rich” spaces. Like we mentioned earlier this week, the long-standing trend of coastal cool starkness is out – we’re bringing on pattern and texture mixing to bring a sense of individuality to the home.

✨Ways to incorporate patterns in your space✨

✨ I have never seen a black and white check tile floor that I didn’t like….ok well that’s not true! But if done right, checkerboard floors will be a timeless addition to your home that you won’t regret. And seeing as though checkerboard floors date back to ancient Egypt, it’s safe to say that this is the furthest thing from a passing “trend”.

✨ You’re also going to see a lot more stiped tile patterns showing up in bathrooms. To keep a classic look, without the risk of going out of style, you can bring stripes in by using classic subway or zellige tiles in cool colours.

✨ If adding patterned wallpaper and textiles seems like too much to take on, just stick with the basics! Mix those patterns through pillows and throws. There’s great sites like Tonic Living that will give you suggested pillow patterns that work together, along with corresponding throws.

2024 Design Trends Day Four: BOLD colour

We just L-O-V-E industry predictions, because in the same year “quiet neutrals” are the ‘hottest thing’, bold coloured EVERYTHING is too! “Dopamine décor”, coined by Decorilla, explores spaces that trigger happiness and delight through bold vibrant colours and whimsical patterns. And just as much as we’re seeing quiet luxury, we’re also a whole lot of bold dopamine going into 2024.

✨ Ways to bring bold colours into your space ✨

✨Sounds like a “duh”, but paint is obviously king in the bold colour space. For 2024 though we’re going big. Forget simple feature walls, we’re painting the ceiling, trim and doors in rich wild colours.

✨On the flip side, we’re also seeing completely stark white walls with super funky bold art and statement furniture pieces. Think gallery-like spaces, where every item in the room becomes part of the “installation”

✨Also coming in hot are big HUGE bold light fixtures. We’re making a statement through lighting! For the 2024 season, you’ll also start to see more neon in lighting trends. Not ready to commit to electric green? No problem! Upcycle an old lamp using spray paint and a new shade.

2024 Design Trends Day Three: Upcycled Vintage

While the ‘pros’ are claiming that upcycled vintage is “hot” for 2024, let’s be clear…upcycled vintage should NEVER go OUT of style. In a world where trends come and go (see: this post), we need to be better at repurposing outdated furnishings and décor and finding ways to incorporate into our home.

✨ Easy ways to upcycle ✨

✨ I’ll be the first to admit that I have a pillow problem. When I feel like my space needs a quick refresh, the first thing I change are pillows and throws. BUT! I never throw out old pillows. I remove the covers and store for later and repurpose the interiors as needed. I have also pulled out old pillow covers more than once as trends come back. No joke, for those who still have chartreuse pillows from 2005 ish they’re about to have another moment!

✨ Park old décor for later – if you’re blessed with extra storage space, don’t throw away décor that you are no longer using. Just like chartreuse pillows, I’m positive chrome and owls will make a comeback before we know it! There’s also amazing tips online on how to repurpose décor using spray paint etc. Pinterest is king for upcycling content!

✨ Think outside the box and I mean beyond using an old dresser as a bathroom vanity! I have seen highboys converted into hood vents, dressers made into bars, entertainment units changed into lockers for kids. Get creative!

2024 Design Trends Day Two: Quiet Refinement

We’re a bit torn on this one. While experts are predicting this “quiet luxury” concept continuing through 2024, social media is already starting to steer in a TOTALLY different direction. If you’re following trends on social, the “Mob Wife Aesthetic” is completely taking over!

So I’ll add this to the list with an asterisk that I think we might see a resurgence of glitzy glammy opulence at some point. And fur…all things fur (faux of course!).

✨ How to create quiet luxury in your space ✨

✨ Neutral plush textiles are key. Think Linens, velvet and boucle/shearling in super neutral taupe, beige and creams. If you’re looking to add colour, think navy, olive green or black. That’s it….

✨ Simple abstract prints with minimalist patterns. Nothing too loud or bright.

✨ Stone and wood finishes. Marble, oak, travertine. For the past year wood tones are starting to warm up and get away from the stark neutral oak we’ve seen for so long. This will continue into 2024.

We’re back! The team at Dwell Studio took a bit of a break after an extremely busy 2023 holiday season, but we’re back at it and ready to design the heck out of 2024! Kicking things off we thought we’d do a weeklong series on 2024 design trends and show you ways you can incorporate these styles into your own home.

Starting things off let’s take a look at one of the hottest trends for this year, earthtones. More specifically…..all things BROWN.

Colour trend experts have been seeing a slow transition to a warmer earthtone palette over the last year, with shades of brown coming in as the standout heading into 2024. It’s really no surprise considering whites and neutrals have been completely dominating the design world for a while now. It feels like its time to bring a bit of depth and richness to our lives again, and while we’ll forever love a clean coastal aesthetic, we’re here for a bit of earthy warmth….especially on a cold winter day!

✨ How to use earthtones in your space ✨

✨Nothing says earthy luxury more than a rich brown velvet. Going into 2024 you’ll see a ton of it used in pillows, throws, bedding and window treatments. This is perfect for those who may not be not ready to take the plunge and paint your walls chocolate brown! It’s an easy addition to warm up your space.

✨ Looking to make more of a statement? York Wallcoverings has named Bay Brown as their colour of the year and boy did they come through with wallcovering options to match! You can be as bold (or not!) with wall coverings - it’s also a great opportunity to add texture to your space!
