🍂 October Garden To-Do List 🍂

The nights are getting colder, which means your garden beds need a little TLC before winter sets in. Here’s what’s on our list this month:

🌱 Harvest the last of your veggies + herbs
✂️ Clear out spent plants
🪴 Refresh the soil with compost
🧄 Plant garlic + spring bulbs
🍁 Mulch the surface for insulation
❄️ Order your winter covers before the first frost

🧄 Want an endless supply of homegrown garlic?

October is a great time to start thinking about planting garlic for next summer’s harvest! 🍂 The goal is to get your cloves in the ground about 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes, giving them time to establish roots before winter.

Here’s how to do it:

🌱 Plant: Separate your garlic bulb into individual cloves and plant them 2” deep, with the pointed end facing up.

📏 Space: Leave 6” between each clove to give them room to grow.

🍂 Mulch: Cover the soil with a layer of mulch and straw to help insulate your garlic through the winter.

❄️ Wait: Let nature do its thing! Your garlic will go dormant over winter and begin growing again in spring, ready for a summer harvest.

The best part? Save a few cloves from your harvest and plant them again next fall for another round of homegrown garlic. ♻️

How many of these fall garden mistakes have you made? 🍂

1️⃣ Letting the last of your harvest go to waste. Grab every last bit of kale, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs to eat, freeze, dry, or pickle. Your future self will thank you!

2️⃣ Not saving your seeds. Your best plants literally hand you next year’s garden for free! Let a few go to seed, dry them out, and label them for spring planting.

3️⃣ Thinking the growing season is over. It’s not! Lettuce, kale, spinach, and other greens actually love cooler weather. Sow a little every couple of weeks if the frost allows, and you’ll be enjoying harvests way longer than you’d expect.

4️⃣ Leaving tired summer planters out front. Those crispy summer blooms have had their moment. Swap in seasonal florals like mums, trailing ivy, and ornamental cabbage for an easy fall refresh that looks amazing right through to frost.

Basil growing like crazy? 🌿 Don’t let it go to waste. Turn that fresh harvest into basil butter!

It’s incredibly easy to make and adds a little something extra to everything from warm bread and roasted vegetables to grilled meats and pasta.

🧈 Basil Butter
Ingredients:
• 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
• 1 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed
• 1 clove garlic, crushed or minced
• 1 tsp lemon zest (optional)
• ½ tsp salt
How to make it:
1. Soften your butter until smooth and easy to stir.
2. Finely chop the basil, or pulse it briefly in a food processor.
3. Mix the butter, basil, garlic, lemon zest and salt until fully combined.
4. Spoon onto parchment paper or plastic wrap and roll into a log. Twist the ends to seal.
5. Refrigerate for 1–2 hours, or until firm.

Slice off a little whenever you need it and keep the rest chilled for your next meal. 🌱
