Today's feature has just been finished and is fresh out of the workshop! This is the largest edition yet of my first Comic Book Ads series, measuring in at 12" x 9 1/2" x 2 1/2". The box itself is a jewelry box that I picked up somewhere along the way through an auction. It is constructed of wood and decent quality, but definitely mass produced. As such, I realized it could be much more if it had some character, and it definitely has that now. The biggest selling point for me is the big lid and the massive display space it offered. It is really nice to see so much of the full print clearly displayed. And while it is not super tall, it has lots of space inside with that kind of faux crushed velvet lining the interior and covering the bottom. This series has made for a lot of very cool pieces, but this is for sure one of my favourites.

So here is the result of last week's idea and along with it a recap. I started off with eight little boxes approximately 2 1/2" square and a bit shorter than that in height. I figured I would use them as drawers somehow. My initial thought was to do a forward-facing cabinet with eight drawers. Small drawers like that are prone to falling out, though, so I came up with a second idea that combined two drawers into one, making them longer, and instead of front-facing, I decided to make the drawers slide side-to-side. That first decision locked in the rest of the project as I just had to build a shell to house the drawers. To that end, I used a 2x4 to construct the sides and structure and the bottom and top pieces come from a piece of a pine table structure that one of my neighbours had left out for the trash. The k***s match on each side of the drawers but are four unique pairs, all of which I had picked up used through an online auction. The stain colour is English Chestnut, the inside of the drawers and the bottom of the feet are lined with cork, and it measures roughly 8" x 4" x 10 1/2". For me, this project really proves the value of coming up with multiple ideas for a project and then choosing the less obvious one. Have you ever seen a chest of drawers like this one? Me neither. That's why it's cool.

You remember those boxes I showed off that had the circular print on the outside? Well, had I opted not to paper them, this is what they would have looked like and the design holds up either way. Maybe the most interesting thing about this box is its bottom which in its previous life was part of a cutting board. I like to recycle and upcycle wood wherever possible and this opportunity not only gave this box a very solid base, it also adds a lot to this project's unique personality. I painted the inside of the box brown and now whenever I look at it, I crave chocolate fondue. I can't guarantee you will or won't have the same experience.

Today I am presenting the last of the first run of my Pencil Crayon series. You've got a hang of the general specifics of this series at this point, so I won't describe its features again. Will there be more? That will depend on what kind of response this batch get at market in the coming months. Remember, every time you purchase a unique handmade item from a creator, you are voting for where you think they should put their energy in the future!

My work in progress is progressing! To whet your appetite, last week I picked up eight little square boxes from an auction. After some thought, I decided to combine two boxes together into a single drawer and then put them all together in a single structure. The k***s I'm using are vintage and the cabinet itself is built out of two pieces of wood recycled from a neighbour's wooden play centre (the top and bottom) and a chunk of a 2x4. Two coats of English Chestnut stain are on now, varnishing will start on Friday. Stay tuned...

So... my Ottawa box has leveled up to an chair. The chair itself is an antique wooden chair that I worked on sometime back. The skin I have put on it is my Ottawa print that features my photography of twenty-one unique places around the capital which I have worked on and filtered digitally before applying Mod Podge and then coating with polyurethane. This is a first attempt. What do you think... is this an area worth further exploration? Let me know!
