I’m back from a week of holidays with my family, where we soaked up summer in every way we could think of. The days were busy, but taking a step back from design projects left me some time to think. JMDS turns four this week, which slips past me each year in the hustle of making memories with kids, running design projects, and trying to do it all (while simultaneously feeling like it’s never enough). Like anyone who’s a bit addicted to work, I spent my free evenings reviewing the business, scheduling out the rest of this year, and planning for 2027 (!).
Through the excitement of planning I couldn’t shake this feeling that there’s been a bit of a disconnect from the reasons I started. At the time, I really just wanted people to feel good about their homes, stemming from a love of transformative design and a passion for people. Over the last four years our projects have gotten bigger, more involved, more detailed, and I honestly love it. I love the opportunities we have, the people we meet, and building things from the ground up.
But I know that renovating or furnishing a home is a big investment, and not always a right now thing. Maybe the kitchen renovation is five years away… maybe you’re saving for an addition or new build. Maybe you have young kids and replacing every piece of furniture doesn’t make sense at this stage of life (🙋🏻♀️).
But you still live in your house now… you still have people over, you still walk into that room every day and wish it felt more pulled together, or you feel stuck in what it is and don’t know where to start.
As we’ve evolved, I’ve gotten further away from that part. Which has been bittersweet because again… I love where we are now.
But this is a reminder sometimes you just need a fresh set of eyes, or to know how to improve things in the meantime… a way to love your home in whatever stage you’re in.
Anyway, I’m just over here reflecting, grateful for the opportunities we’ve had and everything JM has grown into, but also reminding myself that it’s still about feeling good in your home, with what you have, where you are right now.
Your home doesn’t have to be “finished” to feel good in.
