September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also recognized as Orange Shirt Day.
Today we remember and honour residential school survivors, their families and communities, and the children who never returned home. It is a day to listen, learn and reflect on the history and continuing impacts of Canada's residential-school system.
We are grateful to work throughout the year with Indigenous-owned businesses, artists and makers from across Canada. One of those businesses is Buffalo Cross ( ), an Indigenous-owned Canadian brand whose blankets are designed and sewn in Canada. Buffalo Cross describes its blankets as symbolizing truth and reconciliation, and this year they are sharing a collection featuring orange colours and accents.
We are honoured to feature one of their blankets as we reflect on the meaning of reconciliation, and recognize that it is something not confined to a single day. As we continue to recognize and build respect with Indigenous Peoples and businesses, we understand that listening, learning, remembering, and compassion are all key parts of truth and reconciliation.
