Gutter guards reduce debris entry. They do not eliminate it.
The specific failure mechanism most Ottawa homeowners with guards don't know about: fine debris accumulation on the guard surface.
Micro-mesh guards work by allowing water to pass through while debris remains on top. In theory, rain washes that surface debris off the guard. In practice, in Ottawa's humid autumn conditions, fine debris shingle grit, pollen fragments, pine needles forms a damp mat on the mesh surface.
That mat doesn't wash off. It sits on top of the mesh and gradually reduces water infiltration through the guard redirecting water over the front edge of the eavestrough rather than through the system.
The result: a guard-protected eavestrough that overflows not because of debris inside the trough, but because of debris on top of the guard.
Solution: an annual inspection and surface clearing of the guard system typically faster and less intensive than a full clean, but necessary.
Over 70% of double-pane windows experience some form of moisture infiltration within 15 years of installation. The parallel is exact: the maintenance solution doesn't eliminate the problem, it manages it.
