I know we have been quiet on the socials. Every time I open social media these days, I see more ways governments are failing their citizens, people who are emboldened by the anonymity of the internet using that shield to bully and hurt others for no reason, and now AI making me question what was actually crafted with real thought and intent and wonder if imagination and critical thinking skills are slowly becoming a skill of the past. This is all an oversimplification of what is actually going on but it makes me yearn for connection and things that are real and tangible rather than just scrolling. So, with that in mind, I wanted to try and reconnect more tangibly with you all again! For June, July and August (and if time allows, carrying on into the fall), I am bringing back the High In Fibre Podcast and some zoom socials! What I want to know is - what did you want to hear about/see? And are you even interested in doing some zoom hangs?

I have trigeminal neuralgia and 8 years ago today, I took a huge chance and had elective brain surgery in a hope that it might make some of the pain and symptoms I lived with every day less. It took nearly a decade of pleading with specialists who told me to “explore my emotional problems” or that I was “too young” before I was finally granted a surgical referral. I can remember getting the phone call back and the surgeon, having looked at my MRIs, said that it would be risky but he might be able to help me. Almost a year after my referral, the wait was over and I flew to Winnipeg for my surgery. I was told there was a 50% it would help and a 50% chance it could be made worse. I couldn’t imagine what worse would be but my surgeon, for the first time in my TN journey, gave me control over what was going to happen next. I took the chance, I had the surgery and while physically, it being one of the most intense experiences of my life, it was absolutely the best thing I have ever done. 8 years ago today if you asked me if I could imagine my life where I play music, where I could eat without fearing the electric jolts of nerve pain or even just being able to enjoy a kiss on the cheek, I would have said I had no idea what that would be like and I couldn’t remember what it was to exist without debilitating nerve pain ruling every decision I made.
Trigeminal neuralgia is known as the “suicide disease” as the rate of attempt is very high. TN is incurable, my surgery gave me my life back but it is only a bandaid that will likely one day fail. TN is a rare condition that is hard to diagnose.
Today, I am thankful for my little teflon sponge pillows that live in my skull. I am one of the lucky ones and I try my hardest to remember that on every good day that I have.
Happy 8th brainaversary to me!

It’s international TN awareness day, a condition i was diagnosed with nearly 15 years ago now. Characterized by episodes of extreme nerve pain in the face, it has earned the nickname of the “Suicide Disease” and on a medical pain scale it is frequently found near or at the top of the most extreme form of pain anyone can experience and regular pain killers do nothing to touch the pain. I personally fought to have brain surgery for years (7.5 to be exact) in the hopes that it would help even just a tiny bit. I am one of the lucky ones - my surgery helped! It isn’t a cure and now, several years on, my bandaid is losing some of it’s stick but my quality of life is so so much better than it was pre-surgery. TN is an invisible disease that affects every aspect of being human. Eating, talking, brushing hair, a gentle breeze, a bright light - all triggered attacks of pain that sometimes lasted seconds and other times hours to days. It was like walking through a minefield just existing in my pre-surgery life. I hope my TN never gets to that point again but I also realize that I am one of the lucky ones. Everyone knows someone with an invisible condition and it can be a lonely place to be, so next time a friend has to cancel plans last minute or passes on hanging out, remember that you might not know what is happening behind closed doors.
