There's a version of mattress shopping where you compare foam densities and coil counts on a spreadsheet and eventually make a decision based on a number.

And then there's asking a simpler question: what is this thing actually made of, and is it something I want to spend eight hours a night in contact with?

The most useful thing we can tell you about shopping at Sidney Mattress & More is probably something we shouldn't be the ones to say.

Not because we don't mean it. But because everyone says their store is friendly, their service is personal, and their products are quality. Those words have been used so many times they've stopped carrying weight.

What carries weight is a stranger on the internet who bought a mattress six months ago, slept on it, and took five minutes out of their day to write about it honestly.

Free delivery gets mentioned a lot in retail. It usually means something arrives in a box on your doorstep and the rest is your problem.

Ours means when our trusty delivery people show up with your mattress, bring it inside, and make sure everything is right before he leaves.

No truck rental.

Seven years ago, Doug opened the doors at Unit 1A on Bevan Avenue with a pretty straightforward idea: Sidney deserved a proper mattress store. One where you could take your time, ask real questions, and leave with something that was actually right for you, not just whatever was on promotion that weekend.

A lot has changed in seven years. Supply chains, shopping habits, the way people research before they ever walk through a door.

What hasn't changed is the conversation that happens in the store.

Someone comes in not entirely sure what they're looking for.

We talk about how they sleep, what's been bothering them, what their budget looks like. We walk around the floor together. They lie on a few things. Somewhere in that process, it usually becomes clear.

It's not complicated. It's just not something an algorithm can do.

Seven years of those conversations. Families we've helped more than once first a guest room, then the master, then a kid heading off to university. People who came in sceptical and left surprised. The occasional person who just wanted to chat and didn't buy anything, and that was fine too.

Elevating your head by as little as 15 degrees can reduce snoring by a meaningful margin not because it fixes the underlying anatomy, but because it changes the angle of your airway enough that soft tissue is less likely to collapse against it when your muscles relax during sleep.

For a significant number of people, that's the whole problem. Not a structural issue. Not sleep apnea requiring a machine. Just gravity, working against a throat that's parallel to the ceiling.

The answer was to recline the astronaut at an angle where the knees sit slightly above the heart, the head is gently raised, and body weight distributes evenly across the full surface area rather than concentrating at the heaviest points — hips, lower back, heels.
