I always look forward to the point in a project when all the samples finally land on the same table.

You can love the tile, countertop, hardware and fabric individually, but it isn’t until you see them side by side that you really know whether they work together. Sometimes the choice we felt most certain about is the first one to go.

We move things around, swap a finish or take something away, and then suddenly it clicks. You can start to see the room coming together, and I think that might be one of my favourite parts.

You know what’s surprisingly difficult? Making a very neutral room feel like it has personality. Because once you remove bold colour and pattern, there’s nowhere to hide. You need variation somewhere, and this powder room gets it through texture.

Look closely and almost every surface gives you something different: the fine reeding on the vanity, natural wood grain, soft movement in the stone, textured wallcovering, brushed brass and the clean black edge of the mirror. None of those details is particularly loud on its own. Together? They give a tiny room so much depth.

Imagine trying to design one house when one person says “transitional” and the other says “ultra-modern.” That was basically our starting point at Haven.

I think that little push and pull is part of what made the house so good. We could bring in cleaner lines and more sculptural moments—like this big arched oak niche—and then soften everything back down with warm woods, tactile fabrics and pieces you want to curl up in.

You can know exactly what you like and still feel unsure about how to bring it all together in your kitchen renovation.

Maybe you’ve saved light oak cabinetry, a dark range hood, brass hardware, reeded glass and statement lighting. You love each one individually, but once you start imagining them in the same kitchen, it’s easy to second-guess whether they’ll all work together.

That’s where having a clear design direction makes such a difference. We help you sort through the ideas, make confident decisions and create a home where every detail feels connected.

This kitchen is a good example. There’s contrast, warmth and plenty of detail, but everything belongs. I think that’s what people are really looking for when they say they want their home to finally feel “right.”

This is such a good question because hiring a designer doesn’t mean handing over your home and hoping for the best.

The same applies whether you’re working with us on a full-service interior design project or bringing your home together through interior decorating and furnishings. You’ll absolutely be part of the process.

We’ll ask lots of questions, bring you clear options and talk through the decisions that matter. At the same time, we’ll keep track of all the details, timelines and moving pieces behind the scenes.

The home should still feel completely like you. You just don’t have to figure out every decision on your own.

Would you believe me if I told you we removed two windows to make this family room better?

The windows on either side of the fireplace were limiting what we could do with the room, so we covered them to make way for custom millwork, hidden storage and a fireplace wall with much more presence.

We couldn’t mirror the tall built-ins on both sides because of another existing window, so we designed a bench instead. And honestly, I think it turned out even better. The asymmetry gives the room more character, the bench created a cozy little place to read, and there’s still plenty of natural light.

Would you believe me if I told you we removed two windows to make this family room better?

I especially love when clients make their primary bedroom a priority. So much of a family home is designed around everyone else, and this is the one space that gets to be just for them.

What began as a spec home became a highly personalized home for this client, and their bedroom was no exception. A little moody, beautifully layered and full of character. It feels completely their own.

September always seems to change what I notice. Suddenly I’m drawn to deeper colours, heavier textures and rooms with a little more mood to them.

I think that’s what I love about this time of year. It reminds me that a home doesn’t always need to feel light and bright to feel inviting. Sometimes a darker wall, a warmer palette or a few more layers are exactly what make a room feel interesting. Maybe that’s why these moments from past projects are catching my attention again.

Back-to-school routines are in full swing, and mornings and the after-school rush are just easier when everything has somewhere to go.

When I can, I always make room for a spot to sit, pull on shoes, hang jackets and tuck away all the things that come through the door. It’s one of those little things that makes a big difference every single day.
