⚾ Throwback Thursday: The Vancouver Asahi ⚾

In 1914, a group of young Japanese Canadian baseball players in Vancouver formed a team that would become one of the most respected amateur clubs in British Columbia history: the Vancouver Asahi.

Their name, "Asahi," means "morning sun" in Japanese. They played out of Vancouver's Japantown area near Oppenheimer Park and quickly developed a reputation for a style of baseball known as "brain ball." Rather than relying on size and power, they used speed, precision bunts, stolen bases, hit-and-run plays, and exceptional teamwork to defeat larger opponents.

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the Asahi won numerous league championships and became crowd favourites wherever they played. They often faced discrimination both on and off the field, yet earned the respect of fans and competitors across British Columbia through their sportsmanship and skill.

This newspaper clipping captures the team as they prepared for a tour of Japan, a major accomplishment for a community team from Vancouver. At the time, international travel was neither easy nor common, making the trip a significant event for both the players and the local Japanese Canadian community.

Sadly, the team's story was interrupted in 1941. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the forced internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, the Asahi ceased operations. Many players and their families were removed from the coast and lost their homes, businesses, and possessions.

Decades later, the team's legacy was finally recognized. The Vancouver Asahi were inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 and honoured by the Canadian government as a National Historic Event in 2018.

More than a baseball team, the Asahi represent perseverance, community, and the important contributions Japanese Canadians made to Vancouver's history.

Have you heard of the Vancouver Asahi before today? ⚾🇨🇦

☀️ Monday Motivation ☀️

There was a time when clothes were often made to last, repaired instead of replaced, and passed from one generation to the next.

A dress wasn't just something you wore. It might have been worn to a dance, a wedding, a church social, or a special family gathering. Years later, it might still be hanging in a closet, carrying memories of laughter, music, and people long remembered.

That is one of the things antiques remind us of.

The objects we treasure today were once part of someone's everyday life. They were cared for, valued, and kept because they mattered.

As we start a new week, maybe there is a lesson in that. Some things are worth preserving. Family stories. Friendships. Traditions. Memories.

After all, every item tells a story. ❤️

What is something from your past that you wish you had kept?

Remember when Dad had that one shelf?

You know the one.

The shelf where "important things" lived.

An old pocketknife. A strange rock from a camping trip. A fishing lure that hadn't seen water since 1987. A rusty bolt that might be useful someday. And at least one item that made everyone else in the family ask:

"Why are you keeping that?" 🤔

This rainbow skull bottle feels like it belongs on that shelf. 💀🌈

It's colourful. It's unusual. It's a little mysterious. And somehow, it would fit right in beside all those treasures Dad swore were too important to throw away.

Because dads don't collect stuff.

They collect stories.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads, grandpas, stepdads, and father figures who taught us that every object has a memory attached to it. ❤️
