Dolly understood the joke, was usually in on it, and never confused how the world saw her with who she actually was.
Dolly Parton spent more than six decades showing women what it looks like to know exactly who you are and never apologize for it. She wrote the songs, owned her work, built businesses, gave back to millions, and did it all while refusing to let anyone else define her.
From “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” to “9 to 5,” Dollywood, and her Imagination Library, Dolly’s impact reached beyond country music. She was smart, funny, generous, and completely herself. She could laugh at her own image while maintaining fierce control over her career in an industry dominated by men.
Dolly Parton died today at 80 years old. We’ll miss her music, her wisdom, her humor, and that unmistakable Dolly way of reminding women they never need to make themselves smaller.
Rest in peace, Dolly. Thank you for showing generations of women how powerful it is to be entirely yourself. 💖
