As we welcome the first of January, I’ve been thinking about how we perceive time.
For many of us, today is a day of new beginnings. But within our islamic heritage, the 'New Year' carries a different, deeply historical meaning.
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar doesn’t start today; it begins with the month of Muharram. As I’ve shared in the second slide, this choice was made by the Sahabah (Companions) nearly 1,400 years ago. They didn't choose a season, they chose an event: the Hijrah (migration), a journey of faith and the start of a community.
I know today feels like a big 'fresh start' for so many, but I love that our deen gives us so many chances to reset. Whether you’re leaning into today or focusing on our own Hijri months, I think there’s so much beauty in just being intentional with our time.
My soon-to-be-released 'unfolding' mobile wallpapers are a tribute to that journey, designed for those of us who appreciate a life lived with purpose and reflection. Each design features the Hijri dates for Rajab, Sha'ban, and Ramadan, blooming as we move closer to the holy month.
