Meet Tim and Estelle Levangie, the dynamic duo behind Thyme for Ewe Farm, a quaint agricultural haven nestled in Millville, Cape Breton. Their journey began when Estelle, hailing from France, crossed paths with Tim at the Agricultural College in Truro. United by their passion for farming, they decided to make Cape Breton their forever home.
As parents to three boys, the Levangies embarked on a remarkable venture, establishing a certified Organic market garden on their small farm. Over the years, their commitment to sustainable practices led them to expand their offerings, including raising free-range chickens, pigs, cows, and a menagerie of sheep, goats, and ducks for personal use. A culinary touch was added as they ventured into processing their pork into delectable sausages and bacon.
Thyme for Ewe Farm's journey wasn't without its challenges. Initially starting with dairy sheep, the Levangies encountered hurdles, prompting them to pivot towards poultry and pigs, later incorporating cows into their diverse repertoire. Through resilience and hard work, they weathered the storms, celebrating the farm's continued success after 13 years of ownership.
Tim and Estelle emphasize the need for communities to rally behind small local farms. Rising transport costs underscore the significance of supporting local, not only for economic reasons but also for the health benefits associated with consuming fresher, locally sourced foods.
Reflecting on their journey, Tim and Estelle express pride in their accomplishments and a deep sense of fulfillment in still running the farm today. They continue to advocate for increased support for small local farms, recognizing the vital role they play in both sustaining the local economy and fostering community health through accessible food production for all.
