If you require an in-person quote on jobs that can not be brought to the shop there will be a non-refundable $75 upfront fee. Without good structure nothing you do after will look right.

Lots of careful planning and checking to make sure everything is lined up, stitched straight, and stuffings regulated evenly.

But even though all the hard work will be hidden it’s essential in all upholstery using modern or traditional methods and materials that the base structure is good.

Using $1/yard fabric or $1000/yrd fabric if the base is good it will look good. If the base is wrong then no matter how fancy the piece and how expensive the fabric all anyone will see is a flawed wonky structure.

Don’t just make a thing, create a piece of quality craftsmanship.

Proof of life.

Busy the past week holding my estate sale. Didn’t get a lot sold or as much space made as I would have liked so lots is headed off to donation. It was great seeing so many familiar faces on the only two cloudy days we had last week.

Back to finishing this 1920’s set with a mix of traditional and modern techniques and materieal. Base and back are all hand tied springs. Base has hand stitched front edge and coir mat over the springs as first layer. Arms have hand placed stuffing on the frame, then layer of hessian, then coir mat, then foam.

Next step is cotton scrim to hold it all down smooth and then a final layer of cotton and the show fabric.

Monty’s ESTATE SALE.

June 13th and 14th from 9:30am until 5pm rain or shine.

I am downsizing a large part of my personal belongings from industrial salvage antiques , furniture, tools all the way to vintage clothing and everything in between.

My parents will also have things like power yard tools and furniture mixed in.

So pleases Stop by this weekend and tell a friend. It’s not every day I cut the string with some of my better stuff collected over the years.

Too much to list so check pictures and the posts I’ll be continuing to share all this week leading up to it.

The never ending job of spring tying. It is both the most troublesome and tedious part of making a good piece and I always have blisters and calluses from doing it. But I find it to be one of my favourite parts of working on furniture second only to building and prototyping frames and hand carving legs for custom builds.

What is in a name?

Words are power. With the correct name for anything you create fully formed visions in other people’s minds. You can bring a concept or idea out of the mist of thought and into reality as a solid concept or object.

Books hold the immense power of physically containing humanity’s collective knowledge and quest for the names of everything from objects to concepts.

Over a decade into upholstery and there’s still entire libraries of upholstery related books with knowledge I still don’t have and names I have yet to learn.

But that just means I have the rest of my life to continue to gather the true names of the objects I am searching for and the concepts I wish to understand by reading those books.

Don’t limit yourself to only one language either. Life experience is universal and is not tied to a single language and you may find multiple names for a single thing that all have specific context for what it is called and when.

This is just a sample of my personal upholstery and furniture related library.

Is there any particular book you want to see more of? Comment the title/author of the book you want to see more of and maybe you will learn a few new names for things you have seen or thought of but did not know what to call.
