Practice Peace
Amidst the struggles in the world, we can still find goodness, kindness and peace.

We can be more peaceful within and without. Every morning bring your hands together palms touching in anjali or gassho at your heart centre and say to yourself: "May I be at peace. May we all be at peace." "May I be an example of peace". You may choose words that resonate for you.

Do this over a few weeks and it becomes a practice and can become a resource for you in troubled and good times.

When we are at peace, we can help others to find there inner peace more easily.

We can also choose to practice metta meditation to grow and nurture lovingkindness, compassion and peace.

As well, you may wish to join the World Peace Meditation on July 17 at 7:30 pm. Reiki practitioners and meditators join together to meditate for peace. Intend that the energy goes to loved ones, friends, your community and around the world to all sentient beings. Meditate for about 20 minutes. Notice how you feel during this experience.

Wishing you wellness, peace and harmony. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Love and Understanding
"All nations must come into the temple of universal love and understanding. Love alone will bring lasting peace and prosperity." Paramahansa Yogananda, Indian yogi guru.

Do you have an intention of being loving, kind and compassionate as well as understanding with yourself and others?

If we have this intention then we need to develop the skills of being aware when we encounter difficult moments with others. We need to recognize and accept our emotions like anger, frustration and resentment and bring some spaciousness to ourselves so we don't react in harmful ways. With breathing and spaciousness, creative solutions can arise and we can relate differently. We can relate with genuine caring while maintaining our own boundaries.

This week you might wish to experiment with loving kindness and compassion as you learn the skills of awareness of what you are sensing, feeling and thinking in the moment when a strong emotion arises and then breathing, grounding and allowing some space to unfold before responding. It does take effort on our part to learn these new skills. And, it can make a big difference in our life and the lives of others.

Wishing all happiness, peace and ease. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Tranquility For the Body/Mind/Spirit
"Tranquility is the natural state of the Self, untouched by the fluctuations of the mind." Ramana Maharshi, Spiritual Master & Teacher.

Are you seeking tranquility? Would you like to feel more peace, calm and stillness in your life? Try out mindfulness meditation or practicing a mantra like OM or OM Mani Pane Hum (the Jewel in the Lotus).

We can concentrate on the in and out breath, on a lit candle, on an image like a flower to attain tranquility. This requires practice to find the inner quiet and stillness of the Self.

Some people find peace and deep calmness from listening to chanting or chanting a mantra themselves. The sound and the vibration help them to find tranquility.

This week you may wish to experiment with different forms of tranquility such as the above and following guided meditations as well.

Wishing you peace and ease. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Every Day Metta
Metta or Loving Kindness can be a meditation and it can be practiced through generosity and kindness towards oneself and others.

When we practice Metta and Compassion we are expanding our love and kindness to those who are suffering and we can direct it to ourselves as well.

Loving Kindness practiced daily can also help us to 'gladden the mind' and develop peace.

This week you may wish to experiment with doing a Lovingkindness meditation or extending your love and kindness to others through smiles, thank yous and attentive listening. Notice how you feel during and after the meditation or the actions of kindness.

Wishing you an open heart and peace of mind. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Belonging
Recently Sharon Salzberg, Meditation teacher and author, gave a talk on happiness. She defines happiness as a deep sense of belonging and being resourced in a sense of being at home in our bodies, minds, with each other and the planet.

We gain more happiness in our life, she says, when we gladden our hearts. How? We can practice Loving Kindness as a meditation and/or in action. Examples include thanking someone, giving our full attention to another, being generous, and having compassion for ourselves and others.

This week we could choose to focus on gifting ourselves the practice of gladdening the mind. Smile and say thank you to someone. When something upsets you, let go with care and kindness to yourself. Rather than being harsh with ourselves if we make a mistake, bring some kindness to yourself. Everyone makes a mistake in their life. We can avow to do better the next time and return to a state of compassion for ourselves.

Also see if you can put away your cell phone and really listen and pay attention to another. This is an important way to gladden the mind.

As well, enjoy the scent and beauty of apple blossoms or lilacs that are blooming right now.

Wishing you much real happiness and wellness, Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

The Unfurling of Spring
"The orderly manner in which the universe is run shows that it is guided by some form of intelligence that permeates all created things." Paramahansa Yogananda, Yogi spiritual teacher.

Look around and you will see so many amazing things -- trees with beautiful blossoms, flowering bushes, ferns unfurling and Spring flowers blooming. Stop and smell the heavenly scents of a flowering cherry tree or hear the sounds of a red-winged blackbird or a baltimore oriole.

Spring - so much beauty to see, hear, touch and smell. Enjoy these days of freshness and new beginnings. Maybe Spring will put some zip into your life as you make new intentions to move forward today.

Wishing you happiness and wellness. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Peace & Calmness is Healing
Did you know you can plant lavender in your garden and harvest the buds to help bring about calmness and peace?

This perennial herb has anti-inflammatory qualities and more. It soothes anxiety, relieves pain from arthritis and other physical pains as it calms us. You can also burn bundles of dried lavender to clear negative energy and hang dried bundles for protection in your home.

As well, you can buy lavender essential oil for your use and if you have your own lavender you can gather the buds and make a tea that is soothing.

You may wish to meditate with lavender oil that is diffused in the air through an aromatherapy diffuser. This can help you to clear and calm your mind.

Once the weather warms up a little more (no frost) then you can buy a lavender plant to enjoy the beauty and scent of lavender in your garden and more.

Wishing you calmness and joy. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Present Moment Wonderful Moment
Here's a gatha poem by the Zen Meditation teacher and author Thich Nhat Hahn that reminds us to dwell in the present rather than the past or the future (of course there are moments when we are planning at work or home when we need to think about the future and times when we recall the past. However, we need to keep coming back to the present - the moments of aliveness, freshness and peace.)
Following the Breath
Breathing in, I calm by body(/mind).
Breathing out, I smile.
Dwelling in the present moment,
I know this is a wonderful moment.

Recite this to yourself in or out of meditation slowly a few times as you breathe in and out and notice how it calms and refreshes and enriches your life. Remember to smile.

Wishing you and your loved ones happiness, wellness and ease in your lives. And, may beauty surround you. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Mindful Reflection
"Inwardly think constantly of the Beauty behind the flowers; the Light behind the sun; the Life that twinkles in all eyes; that beats in every heart." Paramahansa Yogananda, 20th c. spiritual teacher and author.

Today and every day practice daily mindfulness as you go about your life. This practice will help you to feel more grounded, calmer and more at peace. Feel the joy that this will create in your life.

Wishing you happiness, harmony and wellness. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Experience This Moment With All of You
"Life is surprisingly interesting, revealing and awe provoking when we show up for it wholeheartedly and pay attention to the particulars." Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., Mindfulness Meditation teacher and author.

Let us seek the goodness in life that exists everywhere and especially in our own hearts. Even amidst the trials and tribulations in our lives and in the lives of others around the world, we can reach out for the beautiful and joyful.

Perhaps we find these qualities in nature - in the song of birds, the sound of a stream gurgling along or in the delicate first flowers of Spring. We might find it in the hug of a loved one or the smile on the face of a stranger. We might also find goodness and joy in prayer or meditation or yoga. We need to sustain ourselves with moments of beauty and joy with all of our hearts. Lightness is always stronger than darkness.

Wishing you wellness and harmony. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.
