🧬 Cattleya alliance

This is a complex hybrid as well. A mixture of genetics so it is robust and beginner friendly. so you’re not chasing a finicky species here. It’s built to grow, and it throws a very clean, saturated red with that hot orange/yellow flare in the throat.

Treat it like modern Cattleya lane: brighter light than a Phal, let it dry a bit between waterings, and don’t keep the roots packed wet.

This is a complex Cattleya alliance hybrid, so you get that classic big-flower look with a bit more vigour and consistency than a lot of straight species.

Colour on this one is the whole point: flat, saturated red across the segments, with a hot orange/yellow flare in the throat and a darker, ruffled lip.

🧬 Standard Phalaenopsis (big lip)

This one is all about the pattern. Up close it’s fine striping and speckling, and from a few feet back it reads like a solid hot pink bloom.

The lip is oversized and busy, so even when the petals fade a bit with age, the face still looks sharp.

Brassocattleyas are one of the easier ways into the Cattleya alliance. A lot of them grow fast, make a fuller clump sooner than the classic big Cattleya types, and once established they can throw blooms more than once a year.

On this clone the patterning and intensity of the colour is magnificent: rusty speckling across the segments and that hot magenta edge on the lip.

Brassocattlya (Brassavola × Cattleya) is a new breedling line of the modern Cattleya intergenerics: bright light, strong roots, and flowers that has elegance and beauty.

Brassocattleya hybrids are now more popular than ever. They are easier to keep than classic Cattleyas. They’ll often build a fuller, bushier plant fast, and once they’re settled, they can flower more frequently (2-3 times a year) than the slower, once-a-year Cattleya rhythm.

You’ll see a ton of variation across Brassocattleya hybrids, but the culture stays pretty consistent.

Prosthechea cochleata

📍 Clamshell orchid (syn. Encyclia cochleata). Native from Florida through Mexico + Central America, and across the Caribbean into northern South America. Epiphyte in damp forests, usually on trunks and branches.
🧬 Laeliinae (Cattleya Alliance)

People also call it the cockleshell orchid, and you’ll hear “octopus orchid” a lot because of those long, dangly sepals.
Fun quirk: the flowers are non-resupinate, so the lip stays on top and the whole thing looks upside down compared to most orchids.

Vandaenopsis Pulcherrimin

📍 Hybrid origin | Southeast Asia

A University of Hawaii cross from 1971 that still holds up. Pulcherrimin is what you get when you cross a Vanda with a Phalaenopsis — two very different worlds combining into something genuinely interesting. The Phal. pulcherrima side brings deep magenta and a compact habit, while Vanda miniata pushes in bright, saturated orange. The result sits somewhere between both parents in the best way.

Unlike pure Vandas, this one doesn’t need to be grown bareroot — but it does want high light. We’re talking enough light to push anthocyanin purpling on the leaves. That’s your signal it’s getting what it needs to bloom.

Maxillaria rufescens (VANILLA SCENTED)
📍 Species origin: Venezuela, Trinidad, Colombia to Central America

💡 Light: Intermediate to bright indirect. A bit more than your typical moth orchid — some direct morning or evening sun works well.
💧 Water: Let it approach dry between waterings. Wet/dry cycle, similar to oncidiums.
☁️ Humidity: Moderate (40%), good watering habits.
🌡️ Temp: Intermediate to warm (18-28°C).

Same family as the coconut-smelling orchid — and this one smells heavenly like vanilla.

We just added this to our own collection and it flowered within a few months. Very easy to grow, especially if you’re looking for something compact and fragrant. As it matures and fills out, we expect it’ll produce blooms the way a Maxillaria tenuifolia does — multiple spikes at once, and the fragrance will be hard to miss.

Don’t let the Latin name scare you. At the end of the day, it’s just a vanilla-scented orchid that’s hard not to love. Make sure to add this one to your collection!

Ancistrochilus roxburghii ‘White Gold’

One of the more underrated African orchids in cultivation. roxburghii is deciduous — it drops its leaves seasonally and blooms while bare, which catches people off guard the first time. There’s something striking about flowers emerging from a leafless plant.

‘White Gold’ is a standout clone with pale, almost luminous blooms against that clean white. The gold lip detail is what makes it. Not a common plant, and the African origin alone makes it interesting for collectors who want something outside the usual Asian and South American genera.

Ludisia discolor var. nigrescens

📍 Southeast Asia (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam)

The standard Ludisia discolor has dark green foliage with red veining, but nigrescens pushes into near-black territory with that deep, almost velvet look that’s genuinely hard to put down.

Ludisia is the most widely cultivated jewel orchid genus for good reason. Forgiving, low light, terrestrial — it grows like a houseplant and looks like jewelry. And when it spikes, those small white flowers are actually fragrant. Most people don’t expect that from a foliage plant.
