What determines the right rug size for a space?

Start with the furniture plan. The rug should anchor the layout, not float under it. Decide whether the furniture sits fully on, partially on, or off the rug.

Scale matters. Too small reads unfinished. The rug should define the space while still feeling intentional and visible.

Let the space guide the shape. Standard shapes define cleanly; custom shapes should follow the layout.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. There is a right process.

The Jim Morrison Rug began as a design challenge: translate music, poetry, and presence into a functional custom rug.

After two years of CAD development, colour refinement, and technical adjustment, the final piece became more than a portrait. From a distance, it holds an image. Up close, it becomes texture, tone, and movement.

The palette was deliberate: moss green, ochre, charcoal, grey, softened neutrals, and quiet rose. Earthy, layered, and built to reflect the mood of The Doors without turning the rug into a novelty.

Selected for the entrance of a high-end steakhouse, the piece now does what strong custom design should do: set the tone immediately.

Choosing the right rug pad depends on the application.

Area rugs need a rubber and felt combination to provide grip, protect the floor, and add controlled comfort.

Stairs and low-profile broadloom perform best with Dura padding and high-density rubber to maintain structure and limit movement in high-traffic areas.

Wall-to-wall carpet requires a hypoallergenic foam pad for consistent support and better indoor air quality.

A project works when the client trusts the process enough to take the right risk.

We partnered with Alexandra Assaf of Arc Interiors on a staircase runner that could have played it safe. Instead, the boldest option was chosen... a Missoni zigzag that does more than fill space. It resolves a traditional setting with a modern, art-led brief and holds its own against detailed architectural elements.

This is where a rug stops being background and becomes part of the structure of the design.

One of the materials we particularly love is New Zealand Wool. New Zealand wool is naturally high in lanolin, which helps protect the fibre and improve durability over time.

It is a renewable resource, sourced from sheep raised in open grazing systems across New Zealand, Australia, and South America. As they graze, the sheep contribute to maintaining and fertilizing the land, supporting healthy pasture growth.

The result is a consistent, resilient fibre with a clear, sustainable sourcing cycle.
