The Osaki family’s story continues! Beyond the artist demonstrations and exhibition at The Japanese Paper Place, the family visited two washi-focused art exhibitions in Toronto and joined us for An Evening with the Papermakers at the Arts & Letters Club.

“I’m back here again to express my gratitude to the Canadian people and to inspire my children”, said Akari during her presentation at the Arts & Letters Club. “If I hadn’t met Nancy and Canadian artists who showed us the importance of our work, I would have quit papermaking many years ago.”

We loved seeing their amazement and curiosity as they discovered new ways of using washi and connected with artists in Toronto. We hope these experiences will inspire the next generation of the Osaki family’s papermaking story 💛

Mon-kiri is a traditional paper-cutting activity that was popular among children during the Edo period. Each design originally featured a family crest (mon) and ranged from geometric shapes to natural forms.

Search “Mon-kiri” online to discover more patterns. With some origami paper and scissors at home, you can join in this playful and meditative activity! 😌💛

Did you know the longest continuously running printmaking studio in Canada is in the Arctic? 👀

The West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset) has been at the heart of the Inuit art community since the 1950s, and is especially known for its annual print collection release.

We have been a proud supplier of washi to the studio since 1982, and are always excited to see their exquisite work printed on washi - connecting papermakers in Japan with Canadian Inuit artists.

The 2026 collection is now available for preview, featuring many works beautifully printed on washi. Take advantage of this early viewing and reservation opportunity before the official release date for sale, Saturday, October 17!

Papermaking tools!✨ There are many unique tools used in papermaking, crafted by other artisans, and sometimes by the papermakers themselves. Hisanao Kataoka of the Osaki papermaking family makes the beautiful brushes in the first two images, used to smooth washi onto drying boards.

We’re excited that Hisanao will demonstrate how he makes these brushes at Celebrating Osaki Washi: Exhibition and Demonstrations. We will also have five Ontario artists demonstrate how they use the Osaki’s Seichosen Kozo and Seikosen Mitsumata. A great chance to watch them work and ask questions about their process!

The Osaki papermakers will also be joining us for a Q&A session at Celebrating Osaki Washi: An Evening with the Papermakers. They will present photographs of a year at Osaki Paper Mill, taking us through the seasons and everyday life around their papermaking. Join us for this rare opportunity to hear them in person.
