A couple weeks ago, I shared a video of my newly finished Lunenburg Pullover and I’m so excited to share the details of this special project with you!
When I became the owner of COCO in January, I knew I wanted to create something special in honour and memory of the women in my life who inspire my love of knitting and fibre arts.
I grew up here in Triton next door to my Nan Jean. Like many of our grandmothers here in outport Newfoundland, Nan was a crafter and maker out of necessity. Knitting double ball mitts and vamps, quilting, tending gardens, cooking and baking from scratch were essential tasks when raising a family in that era. But in her later years, as I was growing up, Nan was able to do these things as a hobby, and just because she enjoyed it. And there was nothing she enjoyed more than moseying around the garden on a warm summer evening with us grandchildren by her side. She taught me the names of every plant, flower and berry bush we would come across, and instilled in me a deep love of nature.
Nan loved all the flowers but her absolute favourites were Bluebells. Clinging stubbornly to the tiniest patch of dirt on rocky cliffs and beaches, these tenacious little plants defy the elements to produce the most precious, delicate flowers. They are a true reminder that beauty can always be found in the most unlikely places, and even small, delicate things can be strong and resilient. I wonder sometimes if that’s the reason she loved them so much.
