Founded in 1950, the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia is the self-regulatory professional body for interior design practitioners in BC. We register interior designers who meet an established standard of experience and competence and conduct their practice in accordance with a prescribed code of ethics. By identifying these individuals as Registered Interior Designers (R.I.D.), the

public is assured of a recognized level of skill and experience when seeking the services of an interior designer. We also strive to advance our profession through public and legal recognition, and providing services to our members including continuing education programs, seminars, networking, business referrals, an awards competition, and charitable and social events. Our external goals are to benefit public health, safety, and welfare, contribute to the enhancement of the environment, and increase the perception, appreciation, and value of design in the community.

Making your membership work harder for you.

The strength of small businesses is what drives our industry forward. IDIBC wants to make sure your design business has the resources it needs to succeed.

Swipe through to see a deep dive into your new CFIB benefits:

- Business Advisory & Protection: Navigate global shifts with ease. Get real-time updates on the new 10-15% global tariffs and 1-on-1 access to experts who understand the Canadian trade landscape.

- HR & Hiring Support: From understanding your human rights responsibilities to accessing employee contracts, “HR Now” is your on-call support team for running a professional workplace.

- A Voice for Business Owners: CFIB is actively advocating for interior design businesses by opposing the BC government’s decision to expand PST to professional services such as architecture and engineering. While interior design services are not directly included, this policy increases the overall cost of home building and raises operating costs for multidisciplinary firms that include Registered Interior Designers.

IDIBC is an official sponsor of ’s second annual exhibition, presented in collaboration with the !

The 2026 exhibition, titled Making Space: The Feminine Palette and Presence in Design, will take place March 7–8, 2026, in Vancouver, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The exhibition weekend will include a curated opening event followed by a public, stand-alone exhibition.

Opening Event: Saturday, March 7 | 1:00–4:00 PM (Arrival & Refreshments, Welcome & Intro Speech, Open Exhibition and Organic Networking)
General Exhibition: Saturday, March 7 | 4:00–6:00 PM
General Exhibition: Sunday, March 8 | 11:00 AM–4:00 PM

Location: Another Studios Inc., located within Focal on 3rd, an AFBC Award-Winning building at 107 E 3rd Ave, Vancouver, BC.

Making Space: The Feminine Palette and Presence in Design explores how women actively create, claim, and transform space - physically, socially, culturally, and imaginatively - across a wide spectrum of practices. The exhibition considers space not only as something built, but as something shaped through process, material, form, narrative, and lived experience.

Bringing together work from architecture and a broad range of design-related and spatial practices—including interior and landscape design, art, ceramics, graphic design, and other material explorations—the exhibition highlights how women make space for ideas, communities, identities, and futures. It foregrounds practices that challenge conventions, expand boundaries, and reimagine how environments are conceived, experienced, and inhabited.

They don’t call it the Shine Awards for nothing!

The night was a huge success. The Shine awards are dedicated to the people who do the work, break the barriers, and lift others up as they climb within our industry. Seeing so much passion in one space was inspiring.

Congratulations to the award winners: It was fantastic to celebrate the amazing achievements of Designers throughout the past year with the design community of BC.

Calling all designers! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 11th, for an insightful BUILDEX Design Seminar featuring Alyssa Myshok, RID IDIBC. This session, “Trauma-Informed Design: A Primer,” dives into the critical intersection of neuroscience and the built environment, exploring how we can design spaces that prioritize safety and human emotion. Join us from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM at BUILDEX Level 2, Room 222. Admission is $85, but all IDIBC members receive discounted access—please check your email for your exclusive member discount code!

Seminar Synopsis:
90% of adults in the world have experienced at least one traumatic event. As neuroscience and therapeutic services have advanced in recent years, so has the understanding of trauma and of the impacts of the built environment on human emotions. In turn, Trauma-informed Design (TiD) is emerging as a specialized field of practice which, at its core, results in spaces that embody safety, foster resilience, and support healing. This presentation will start by providing a brief broad-based understanding of trauma: the types, effects on the brain, symptoms, and triggers. Attendees will then gain insight into the Trauma-informed Design framework composed of three spheres – policy and practice, design process, and the built environment. Finally, the role of the designer in the TiD framework will be discussed followed by the presentation and analysis of projects that have implemented the Trauma-informed Design process.
