‘Umeå’, is an original painting by Toronto Artist Birol Joyce, named after a city in Sweden, famously nicknamed ‘City of Birches’. The nickname formed from a tragedy; after a devastating fire destroyed most of the city in 1888. Planners rebuilt the city with wide avenues and thousands of birch trees to act as natural firebreaks.
