5 things we’d plan before the walls close up 👇

As a contractor & interior designer we know how much harder these details are to change once the walls are finished.

1. Support for what you’ll hang

Floating shelves, TVs, towel bars and future grab bars may need blocking: solid backing inside the wall for secure mounting. Confirm locations, heights and product requirements before drywall. Think about what you might need in the future, too.

2. What’s sharing your pocket door wall

The door needs somewhere to go when it slides open. Plumbing, electrical boxes and mounting screws can conflict with that space. Plan switches, shelving and towel bars on both sides around the door system.

3. A plan for laundry leaks

Especially above finished living space. Discuss accessible shutoffs, leak sensors and automatic water shutoffs with your plumber. A floor drain needs proper plumbing and floor detailing. It doesn’t make the room waterproof on its own. Plan this before plumbing rough in.

4. Electrical locations that fit your routines

Where will your vacuum charge? Will bedside outlets be hidden behind the headboard? Can you reach switches when doors are open? Walk through furniture, cabinetry and daily habits with your electrician before rough in.

5. Actual appliance specifications

“Standard size” isn’t enough. Confirm models before finalizing cabinetry and service locations. Check door swings, ventilation, power, water and drainage requirements. A fridge can fit its opening but still lack clearance to open fully or remove drawers.

One extra tip: photograph open walls with measurements before they’re covered. Keep these with your renovation records, but always verify service locations before drilling.

Save this for your renovation and follow us at Watson Construction & Design. We’ll explain each topic in our Plan Before You Renovate series.

And I’m sure I forgot some ;) the job that keeps on giving!

5 things I’d include in every single bedroom as an interior designer 👇

1. Window coverings that give you privacy AND darkness

These are two different needs. You might want daylight without giving the neighbours a clear view, then proper darkness at night.

That could mean a blackout roller shade paired with sheer drapery or lined curtains with a separate privacy shade.

The detail people miss? Blackout fabric doesn’t guarantee a dark room. Light can spill around the edges so placement, width and installation matter.

2. Layered lighting with dimmers and controls within reach

Lighting shouldn’t have just two settings: bright or off.

Dimmers let you brighten the room to get ready, then soften it in the evening. Add bedside lamps, pendants or sconces with separate controls so one person can read while the other settles in.

Renovating? Choose your bed size and placement before finalizing electrical locations. Plan switches within reach and check that bulbs, fixtures and dimmers are compatible.

3. A proper landing spot beside the bed

Your water glass, book, phone and glasses need somewhere to go.

Choose bedside tables for what you actually keep beside you. A surface close to mattress height is generally easier to reach.

Plan an accessible outlet too.

4. A clear path around the furniture

A king bed sounds wonderful until you have to turn sideways to get past it.

Map out furniture before buying. Check that drawers open and bedroom and closet doors swing freely.

Can you get dressed comfortably? Make the bed? Walk to the bathroom without navigating around furniture?

Choose the bed size that lets the whole room function well.

5. Storage designed around your actual routine

Plan for what you own, from hanging clothes to extra bedding. Even the laundry hamper deserves an intentional spot.

Need more storage? Nightstands with drawers, or small dressers beside the bed if space allows can be a smart addition.

Already have plenty? A simpler bedside table with an open base can make the room feel lighter.

Choose furniture that serves a purpose for you.

Save this before you furnish or renovate and share it with the person you’re planning with.

Most homeowners start their renovation by choosing paint colours, cabinets, tile or flooring.

It feels like progress but those aren’t the first decisions that should be made.

The best renovations start with a plan.

Before choosing finishes, think about:

✔️ Your goals

✔️ Your budget

✔️ How you actually live in the space

✔️ Layout

✔️ Lighting

✔️ Electrical

✔️ Storage

✔️ Timeline

When those decisions are made first, every finish that comes later has a purpose.

Beautiful renovations aren’t created by one perfect design choice.

They’re created by hundreds of thoughtful decisions made in the right order.

📌 Save this for when you’re planning your renovation.

One of the biggest misconceptions about hiring a designer is that we’re here to make every decision for you.

We’re not.

Our job is to listen first, ask the right questions and help bring your vision to life while making sure everything works together beautifully.

This client fell in love with this tile from the very beginning.

Instead of trying to change her mind, we designed the rest of the bathroom around it so it became the feature, not the competition.

That’s what good design is.

It’s not about creating a home that looks like mine.

It’s about creating a home that feels like yours.

What’s one design choice you’d never compromise on in your own home?

Hiring the wrong contractor usually isn’t because you asked the wrong contractor.

It’s because you didn’t know which questions to ask.

Most homeowners collect a few quotes, compare the prices and hope they’re making the right decision.

But the lowest quote isn’t always the best value.
The highest quote isn’t automatically the best either.

The contractors you interview should be able to answer these five questions clearly and confidently before you sign anything.

Inside this guide you’ll learn:
✔ What should be included in a quote
✔ What often isn’t included
✔ Who will actually manage your renovation
✔ How changes should be handled
✔ What happens if unexpected problems are uncovered
✔ The green flags and red flags every homeowner should know

Whether you’re planning a kitchen renovation, bathroom renovation, home addition or whole home remodel, these questions can save you money, stress and costly surprises.

I’d rather you ask every question now than regret not asking one later.

📌 Save this guide for your renovation.

📤 Share it with someone choosing a contractor.

Friday afternoon in the office.

While most people think renovations start with demolition, most of ours start right here.

Reviewing plans. Coordinating trades. Answering questions. Catching problems before they become expensive.

The planning stage isn’t the most exciting part of a renovation, but it’s often what determines whether a project runs smoothly or becomes stressful.

Have a great weekend! If a renovation is on your mind this summer, now is the perfect time to start planning.

Most homeowners ask for a renovation quote before they have a proper scope.

That is where things start to go sideways.

If the details are vague, the price will be vague too.

That is why three contractors can look at the same project and come back with completely different numbers.

Before you compare quotes, you need clarity on the layout, finishes, trades, site conditions, permits, structural work, plumbing, electrical, and the decisions that still need to be made.

A proper scope helps you understand what is actually included, what is missing, and what your renovation is more likely to cost.

At Watson Construction & Design, we help homeowners plan, price and manage renovations properly before construction begins.

Save this before you start collecting renovation quotes.

Follow for more honest renovation planning advice.
