Egg Carton Method: The Fastest Way to Plant Bulbs
Stop digging fifty little holes.
This simple kitchen hack lets you plant dozens (even hundreds) of bulbs at once β with perfect spacing every time.
How It Works
Step 1: Dig One Trench
Dig a wide trench to the proper depth β about 3Γ the height of the bulb. Level the bottom.
Step 2: Set the Spacing
Lay cardboard egg cartons side by side in the trench. Drop one bulb into each cup, pointy end up.
Step 3: Cover & Water
Backfill with soil so bulbs are covered by 4β6 inches. Water deeply to settle soil and start breaking down the cartons.
Step 4: Let Nature Finish the Job
By spring, the cartons are gone β and youβre left with a perfectly spaced carpet of blooms πΌ
Important Material Rules
- Use paper pulp or cardboard cartons only
- Never use Styrofoam or plastic
- Cut a small slit in the bottom of each cup to help roots reach soil faster
Best Bulbs for This Method
Perfect fit:
Tulips, daffodils, crocus, grape hyacinth (muscari), scilla
Skip these:
Giant alliums β they need more room than an egg cup allows
When to Plant
Plant in fall once soil temps drop below 60Β°F
Water right after planting β moisture speeds carton breakdown
Simple tools. Smart spacing. Big spring payoff.
Sometimes the easiest tricks are the ones hiding in your kitchen drawer π·
