Bagpipes don’t just make music—they command attention. With their bold, unmistakable sound, they’ve echoed through ceremonies, parades, and battlefields for centuries.

At the heart of the instrument is the bag, which the player fills by blowing into a blowpipe. By pressing the bag under their arm, the piper keeps a steady stream of air flowing—freeing their breath while the music continues uninterrupted. That air travels into the chanter, where melodies come to life as the player’s fingers dance over the holes, much like a recorder or clarinet.

But the magic doesn’t stop there. Three drone pipes rest over the piper’s shoulder—two tenor drones and one bass drone—producing a deep, continuous hum. This rich background sound gives the bagpipes their signature fullness, creating a powerful blend of melody and harmony.

While many people associate bagpipes with Scotland, their story stretches far beyond. Variations of the instrument can be found across the world, from Ireland and Spain to the Middle East and Eastern Europe—each with its own unique voice and tradition.

For the most part, people are kind and caring. Because they care, when they come across something they no longer need, like crafting supplies, those items often find their way to me. It is not unusual to catch me sorting through a bag or box of random supplies that ended up in my workshop.

I sort through the items. Some for my use, some to share and all with a story.

One of the things that I find most precious in those collections of random creativity are handwritten patterns. The pattern might have been copied from a magazine or library book. Or perhaps, whoever wrote the note figured out the details on their own. Whatever the original source, the pattern probably wasn’t found online and it’s most likely written in cursive.

Patterns and recipes scribbled down on a scrap of paper or in a little notebook are priceless. Some people look at these random notes and see trash. I see a little bit of history and a hint into the one who left the note. The person who wrote this pattern out clearly was well practiced making the slippers. Not all the pattern details are there. What kind of yarn is needed? What size of needles should be used? What is the guage? Just the bits of information they needed to carry with them so they could finish the project are included on the paper.

I have no idea who wrote this pattern out. I don’t know whether she is alive or has passed. But, I look at this note and image a kind lady lovingly keeping her hands busy making slippers for her family and friends. Her heart is filled with love and with each stitch she thinks of how blessed she is to have so many people to wear her slippers.
